Hi! My name is Brandy and I'm writing a book called If I Get a Chance. It's a family memoir that explores the effects of intergenerational trauma and mental illness. Through this book, I seek to unpack my family's history and process the events of my own life in an effort to end the cycle of trauma and give future generations a path forward, unencumbered by the ghosts of the past. Though this book is about my family and my life, my aim is to write something that is resonant and enjoyable to a wide audience, that shows people they are not alone, empowers them in their lives, and hopefully makes them laugh a few times along the way.

I currently spend about 30-40 hours a month working on the memoir, including writing, researching, and conducting interviews. Since I'm not being paid to write this book (yet), I cobble together income balancing several different gig economy jobs. That's worked out pretty well for me so far, but I'm really hoping to transition to spending more time writing and less time assembling people's IKEA furniture. I don't expect that this page will provide me with a significant chunk of income, but if it enables me to shift a few hours from the working column to the writing column, or at least helps cover my bubble tea expenses at the tea shop I've adopted as my writing office, that's a good start.
