There's a certain magic in this local hub. I can't exactly put my finger on it. It's a blend of caffeine-fueled morning delight mixed with easy conversation that just feels like home. Today my 'Honey Bee Latte' - a fragrant and comforting concoction of sweet honey, a hint of soothing lavender, and rich espresso - is in hand. As I settle into my favorite corner, the delicate floral notes and coffee aroma sets my mind drifting from this cozy scene to broader currents of the day, the state of the union, and that icky word, 'tariffs.' It makes me wonder what could happen to all my favorite spots if the supply chain diminishes and inflation zoomed out of control.
It's easy to forget the craziness going on in the world around me as I listen to the clinking of mugs. But the truth is, these last 90 or so days have been filled with chaos and uncertainty. As citizens across the U.S. start tightening their budgets in fear of what's next, will special treats like this still be part of the norm? Tariffs bring real challenges to the consumer, especially in a country where a livable wage is just not livable anymore. Trump keeps doubling down on tariffs and how they will be good for the economy, but we all know the real meaning of those icky tariffs and how it will affect our pocketbooks. What worries me is the potential strain on the very fabric of our communities and the places we love to connect and build common ground in.
It's a scary thought, isn't it? To imagine those rising costs just trickling down, forcing the price of something, as simple as, a latte from a small business to creep upward, almost out of reach. And I know it's just a latte, a luxury. But let's look at eggs. Those prices have yet to really come down, and eggs, well, that's not a luxury but a necessity. So, yes something, as simple as, a daily ritual and self-care is usually the first to go as prices start soaring. It makes me wonder what other small joys we might have to sacrifice just to keep up. And it's not just about us - these rising costs put a real strain on small businesses, the places that give our communities their character. We're not just talking about lattes anymore, we are talking about the very heart of our communities, the places where we find connection and comfort in these uncertain times. And frankly it's infuriating to me that Trump's policies are making these small comforts feel out of reach for so many. It feels like he is targeting the very things that make life worth living, the little moments of joy that get us through the day. It's cruel and unnecessary. And it doesn't help that Elon Musk is pushing to make cuts to Social Security and other benefits, making it even harder for those who are already struggling. It's like the American dream is fading fast.
Taking another sip of this honey lavender treat...... it's a small comfort, but a welcomed one. I know it's not just about a latte, not really. It's about tariffs, immigrants, about the LGBTQ+ community, there is so much happening around us right now. It's overwhelming and sometimes, all I can do is focus on one thing at a time. They're about finding the strength to keep going. They're about reminding myself that even when things feel overwhelming, there's still beauty and goodness in the world. These moments are a chance to recharge, so I can go back out there and keep fighting for what I believe in.
