My music is my gift to you. I make it free every place where that is possible (Bandcamp is the most comprehensive, but it should be available wherever you listen).
I don't want to sell the music itself or exclusive extras, so please don't expect that here. I'm not against that, and I even support some artists who do that really well. It's just not what I want to do with my own music.
If you love my work and want to support it, or if you feel a pull of generosity, this is where you can do that. I'm happy to receive a gift when the giver delights in the giving. You can do a one-time gift ("Support") or a recurring gift ("Membership").
Peace,
Ben

Thanks so much for your support, Jack. You are a more faithful writer of your newsletter than I am a reader of it, but I resonated with your idea in #321 (Pleasure Principle) of delight as a natural positive source of energy for creative work. Thanks for generously sharing your careful thinking.

You're welcome! Thanks for putting your music out into the world -- I've been enjoying the new album. What you wrote in your newsletter about memberships and patron "extras" resonated with me too. The flip side of giving away things for free is that sometimes having a little bit of money attached to an artistic object can get people more serious about it, and signal (to yourself too) that what you do and make is valuable and worth paying for (even if you give it away for free). But: I also go back and forth on this.
I go back and forth as well. You're right that money signals importance, and that can be helpful to the artist as well. From my brief experience with this platform, I've found it easier to share in-process things with the closed group of supporters. That feels ok to me because it doesn't feel like a list of exclusive extras, but rather a safe space to have more intimate conversations with the people who care the most. With a group of regular supporters, I think I would feel the sense of meaning about the work I'm doing, so that sharing the finished artifact with the world for free feels like and appropriate, generous invitation into the community, rather than a desperate attempt for attention. Lots to think on here :)
