Why do most artists struggle in India? Majority work and survive within an unorganized sector in the country. Without any job security or even basic contracts in place. Most gigs go unpaid. I once asked someone who had more experience than me: "How does one ensure they get their payments?" His answer ended in one word, clout! But I'd like to address a more fundamental problem with artists and art in our country today. Especially regarding the one's who don't get value for their work and worth.
Do you value the craft you practice? Or does the craft you practice value you?
There is a huge distinction between the two. This distinction fundamentally makes or breaks you as an artist. And if I can remind you the benchmark for any craft in the art industry of India is just on the verge of booming loud. We have a very noisy ecosystem in social media. Most of which pertains to mainstream art, gossip, and noise surrounding it. Word travels fast, but gossip even faster. Work gets work, more work gets much more work. Visibility matters! But your presence can command respect only when the craft you practice values you. Clout follows much later!
