What I love about music is that you’re never quite sure what your collection is missing until you hear it. Mud Coffee’s self-titled debut single manages to tune into something that I’ve been craving for some time – a truthful homage to the origins of rock without the feeling of cheap replication.
Channelling the very best of the bohemian renaissance.
This folky, bluesy track plays through as though Woodstock was merely a week ago and dons all the qualities of a classic soft-rock song – polished harmonies and woeful guitar solo included.
Thanks to my Beatles fixation throughout my formative years, harmonies are a musical quality that my ears are drawn to. ‘Mud Coffee’ exhibit a deep understanding of this technique and uses it to their utmost advantage, delivering a more-than-pleasing vocal waltz throughout the 3:55 play time that zips by before you can say “Hey, these guys sound like Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young!”
Time flies but is also painfully slow
The track deals with the dread of change. It juggles between feeling how the days can drag yet once they become a collective, seem like a blur that slips through your hands like sand. This theme is hammered home in the bridge, the group expressing the distinct anxiety that comes “When all that feels insane becomes the same old mundane.” It tunes in to the longing we have for life’s spark and our constant pursuit of it.
The bridge and guitar solo is where ‘Mud Coffee’ shines. With vocals reminiscent of Pink Floyd and E.L.O, and a solo that allows listeners a moment to contemplate the message of the track, the band has allowed themselves to flex their musical chops without illustrating even a drop of arrogance.
Mud Coffee, comprised of Leon Joullie, Oscar Wahlstedt, Will Davis, and Tom Law, have delivered a thought-provoking, contemporary track that extracts the essentials of 60s rock and sprinkles them all through their composition.
