Folding pleats are the simplest form of folding in origami. After following precrease patterns from other artists for sometimes, I started to explore my own way of folding using pleats. I bought the book ‘Six simple twists’ by Benjamin DiLeonardo-Parker in 2021 to want to start learning origami tessellation foldings. His volume 2 explains clearer of the pleat concepts that starts off as the base fold for some tessellations. When I’m learning, it is interesting to see how a simple pleat concept can be looked over as a necessary fold to achieve certain twist or tessellation pattern but never really looked into as a step that can actually produce interesting designs on its own.
Here are my next exploration on pleats:

I bought large piece of paper of about 90gm and cut into a wide stripe for the exploration above.

I feel that the process above is quite transformative. Every piece of paper starts 2D and the end product can be standing up 3D. With a bulb shining from inside, it brings out the paper grains which is so beautiful. Maybe you can get a better glimpse of the paper texture below.

I captured some progresses while folding the paper and use one of my favourites to produce a digital card for you! It’s free for download in A6 size. A white paper can looks so plain on its own but the folded layers, shadows and light can bring out its beauty.
I shall share until here today. If you like what I do, you can support me by buying me a coffee to keep my art journey going.
Thank you!
Beamy.
Thanks for reading until here!
