I find myself

I find myself

I find myself in the darkness,

The land is ravaged by war here. My name does not matter; call me Bandera. You know my soul—fury and bravery carved out of the Ukrainian soil, battling despair and chaos. Here, even the smell of the earth has a story to tell. It speaks of ancestral sacrifices, of hopes that once were, and the dreams that will be again.

Imagine the trenches—my momentary home and the world's ugliest scar. It is a paradox, a place of life and death, where the lines blur between yesterday and today, and survival overshadows identity. “Foe’s voice is blended with allies," my comrade shouts. A radio buzzes in the background, messages lost in static. Who do you trust when even voices are masked?

But let's not dwell on that. For today, it's time. It's time to channel that iconic fury and braveness that courses through our veins. "I'm alive," I remind myself as I prepare my weapon. This is more than mere existence; it's a mantra that fuels my courage, a stark contrast to the despair that once consumed me. I can almost hear the beats of Cossack drums propelling me forward, just as they have propelled generations before me.

We move quickly out of the dugout. The smell of cordite fills the air, mingling with the pungent odour of the nearby river—the Moscovian diet, we jokingly call it. But there's nothing nourishing here. We tread cautiously. The last time we were too close, the earth beneath us exploded, leaving nothing but jokes among comrades as a cruel reminder.

"Another close call, and we'll be famous," one quips. We laugh, not because it's funny, but because laughter is a brief respite, a fleeting moment of humanity.

The empty shell casings underfoot make me think, "What am I doing?" The question isn't new, but it has never felt more immediate. Here, every moment is heavier than the last, each decision a balance on the scale of fate. But in this fury, this braveness, there's clarity. "What can happen if he's another, and suddenly, this is a good day?" I ponder.

Today, I am unfortunate enough to need this uniform, to need to be a symbol rather than just a man. But I wear it with honour. After all, if we don't fight for Ukraine, who will? We're the living epitaphs of this land, proof that even in times of unparalleled darkness, the sunflowers will bloom, and the Cossack spirit will roar.

Today isn't just another day. It's a day that screams to the world, "We'll never recoil!" Life here does more than merely go on; it roars. It fights until the oppressors are gone. And someday, when this war is a tale told to sceptical youths, they'll say it was fought by people who knew the essence of things—by people who knew that everything that moves and shoots is art, an art of essence, painted in hues of fury and bravery.

Ukraine will win. Ukraine will be free. And until that day, we'll keep writing our fate, one filled with more than just the gloom of war but with the valor spirit of a people who refuse to be conquered.

Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the Heroes!
