Can a blood test detect Polycystic Kidney Disease?

How to diagnose Polycystic Kidney Disease?

Ultrasound is the most authentic and inexpensive way to diagnose if a person has PKD. Sometimes, MRI or CT scans can detect smaller cysts that are not able to be found in ultrasound. MRI measures and monitors the volume and growth of kidneys and cysts.

  • Abdominal CT scan- This test detects smaller cysts in the kidneys.

  • Abdominal ultrasound- This ultrasound test uses sound waves in order to look at the kidneys for cysts.

  • Abdominal MRI scan- This MRI test uses strong magnets to visualize kidney structure and look for cysts.

Is a blood test able to detect PKD?

A blood test looks for abnormal genes causing the disease. However, Genetic testing is not recommended for everyone. This test is expensive, and also it fails to detect Polycystic Kidney Disease in nearly about 15% of people who suffers from it.
