Wabi-Sabi America Chapter 1: The Richest Beggar in the World
You ever seen someone cry in a grocery store? Not the kind of crying that comes from a stubbed toe or a screaming toddler meltdown. I mean the quiet kind. The kind that happens in the organic cereal aisle, right between the oat clusters and the discounted chia seeds.
There’s no sound. Just a person frozen mid-reach, palm hovering over a box like they forgot what they came for… or why they even came at all.
That’s America, the richest beggar in the world. We’ve got everything. Wi-Fi in the sky, personalized ads that know when you’re lonely, two-day shipping for our boredom, 30 flavors of bottled water, and high-def distractions that stream directly into our frontal lobes. And still, we are dying of thirst.
Stuffed, Yet Starving
We don’t lack things. We lack meaning. We lack settling. We lack the ability to just be, without optimizing the moment for content or ROI. You ever notice how silence now feels like failure? I do. We’ve become allergic to stillness. If it isn’t loud, fast, monetized, or lit by a ring light, it doesn’t exist. And yet, brokenness shows up anyway. Not with fanfare, not with collapse, just with a slow corrosion, the kind you only notice when the foundation shifts and your favorite cup won’t sit flat on the table anymore.
The Cult of Fixing
Here’s the lie we swallowed with our multivitamins:
“If you’re broken, you’re behind.”
So we over-correct. We spend fortunes on self-help. We download meditation apps with panic. We chant affirmations we don’t believe, hoping if we say “I am enough” while crying in the minivan, it’ll make it true. Wabi-Sabi says otherwise. It doesn’t fix the floorboards. It just teaches you to listen when they creak. It says maybe the ache isn’t a flaw. Maybe it’s the echo of your soul still alive in a world that taught you to feel nothing.
America the Unsettled
We are a nation built on motion. Conquer the West. Scale the ladder. Swipe right. Hustle harder. Keep moving or die. And somewhere along the way, we lost our ability to settle. Not just geographically—but emotionally. We became migrants of the heart. Displaced from ourselves, always seeking the next thing to name us. Call it progress. Call it ambition. I call it spiritual gentrification. The soul was evicted and replaced with a startup mentality.
The Wabi-Sabi Rebellion
Here’s the twist: Wabi-Sabi doesn’t tell you to do anything. It doesn’t sell you a lifestyle. It doesn’t care how many followers you have. It doesn’t promise transformation in 21 days. It whispers:
“Stop pretending you’re not tired.”
It nods toward that scar on your forearm and says,
“You survived. That’s enough.”
It tells you to put down the hammer, stop renovating your identity, and just sit with the damn glitch in the mirror for a minute. Because maybe the glitch isn’t a defect. Maybe it’s the only part that’s still true.
