Fall is upon us!

FALL IS HERE!!!

As the leaves change color and the breeze gets cooler, fall brings fresh energy for both people and pets. It is my personal favorite time of the year! The perfect time for long walks, cozy snuggly naps, and making sure your pup stays healthy as the seasons change.

Watch Out for Seasonal Hazards

  • Mushrooms: Many pop up in damp fall weather. Some are toxic to dogs—keep an eye out on walks and in your own back yard. The toxic ones can cause an array of issues for your pet from intestinal upset, neurological issues to death. Make sure that your pet is not eating mushrooms and if they do ingest one, pick one of these mushrooms to bring to the vet office so they know how to properly treat your pet if they get sick.

  • Cold Nights: Temperatures can drop quickly. Older dogs, puppies, and short-haired breeds may need an extra layer outdoors.  Or to limit time outside to keep them comfortable.

  • Bonfires: Fall is the best time for bonfires! So, make sure to keep your pet away from the flame and the sparks that come with burning wood.

  • Allergies: Just like people, dogs can sneeze and itch when pollen and mold rise in autumn air.

  • Fleas: They are on the hunt for a warm place to live, and pet to feast on. Checking your pet regularly throughout the fall season for fleas.

    Healthy Fall Habits

Exercise Smart: Cooler weather is great for longer play sessions, but don't overdo it, muscle strains and tears can happen just playing ball in the cooler weather.

Diet Check: Dogs may be less active as the days get shorter. Adjust food portions if needed to maintain a healthy weight.

Vet Visits: Fall is a good time to check vaccines, heartworm prevention, and flea protection because they don’t disappear when summer ends!

    Cozy Comforts for Dogs

    • Provide a warm soft bed away from drafts and doorways. Fuzzy blankets can add an extra soft touch on those cold mornings.

    • Add a few extra play sessions indoors when days get rainy. This is a great place where Licky Mats can come in handy

    • Putting down extra rugs near the entrance to help stop the muddy paw prints from entering the whole house.

    • Seasonal treats like pumpkin can be a healthy snack in moderation.

    • Get your dogs a sweater and booties out for the season and ready for fall play time.

Wishing you and your pup a safe, happy, tail-wagging fall season! 🐾🍁
