Chaos: A Dish Best Left Untouched

Chaos: A Dish Best Left Untouched

May 31, 2026

Hey Friends,

Don’t you hate it when your peace is disturbed? I feel like it’s worse when you and your peace are minding your own business and chaos sneaks up on you unprovoked!

Let me tell you what happened.

Picture it. I am having a nice time with my family at a restaurant, enjoying the first day of Eid. Being a creature of habit, I order the same thing I’d had before—an egg scramble with sweet potatoes, goat cheese, and other deliciousness.

However, when my scramble arrives, it is, in fact, not a scramble. It’s an omelette. I mention this to the server, who quickly takes the plate away. He comes back mere moments later and says, “Here’s that scramble.”

It’s the same exact meal. The omelette has simply been chopped up. It’s still holding strong to its omelette shape! It’s chaos on a plate. I’m immediately mad. These people are playing in my face. I ended up just refusing the dish altogether.

Would you have eaten it?

I didn’t because I felt like I shouldn’t have had to. I also felt like I wasn’t being difficult. (Yes, this is something I asked myself.)

Here’s the thing: I don’t have to accept every dish of chaos I’m served. Neither do you. If your standards include maintaining your peace, accepting and engaging with any sort of chaos is self-sabotage. Protecting your peace is an act of self-love and an act of resistance.

If I would have accepted that plate, I would’ve been sacrificing my peace, lowering my standards, and accepting what someone deems me worthy of having. No.

Would it have felt good to crash out? Absolutely! But, I do try to act (mostly) within reason, and it wouldn’t have been a good example for my kids.

My question to you is this:

What lengths will you go to in order to protect your peace?

Tell me what you think. Leave a comment here or on one of my social media channels: Facebook, Instagram, X, BlueSky, or LinkedIn.

Let’s see where the conversation takes us next Sunday.
