From the Fool, we arrive at the Magician represented by card number one. The Fool has stirred and ignited our spirit with longing for adventure, self-expression, and creativity and now comes the Magician, or the Mind, the Creator archetype. The Magician is also associated with Trickster Archetype.

The Magician’s Purpose for the Hero/Heroine

  • The Magician opens us up to the realm of conscious mind with its creative potential and ability to act as an agent of manifestation. We can manifest our dreams & desires by applying our focused will, attention and action with the help of creative forces, and thus we create the ‘stage’ for our life experiences to unfold life after life created by a larger Universal Magician – the Universal Mind.

  • The Magician is also the seat of our Ego, what we call our conscious identity with its personal stories, memories, experiences and ‘persona’ archetypes that we have adopted in this life for our growth.

  • And finally, the Magician as Mind is a reflection of our true Self (The Fool), hence it is a trickster, grand impostor, the one who tricks our spirit that the magician tools and creations are real, but in reality it is a reflection of the greater Light that is our original SELF which is the SELF of All, UNITY Field, All there is, God. Not two, not three, not many but ONE.

Helpful Insight: This awareness of us being simultaneously timeless and locked in time-space world of the Magician is worth developing as this is our true nature, to be fluid in two worlds of spirit and matter at will. Daily meditation practice will guide you safely through the magician’s trickery.

The Magician Symbolism

In many decks the magician is depicted as holding a magic wand and hovering above the ground in front of the table with magical objects or resources available to the ego instruments of manifestation mind mastery.

The Four Instruments of Manifestation on Magician's Table

The four objects on the table used by Magician represent the four suits of the Minor Arcana and the four elements, symbolizing the resources available to the conscious mind-ego. In Jungian terms, these tools correspond to the four psychological functions required for a balanced psyche:

  • The Wand (Fire): Representing Willpower, Passion, and Intuition.  This tool embodies the spark of creation and the drive to act. Psychologically, it is our Intuition, ability to perceive possibilities and see future potential.
Helpful tool: Contemplate your vision with the energy of Fire & Intuition.

  • The Cup (Water): Representing Emotions, Love, and the Subconscious.  This vessel holds feelings and relational depth. It corresponds to the Feeling function, which perceives  life based on value and emotional resonance.
Helpful Tool: Invest emotional energy into your vision.

  • The Sword (Air): Representing Intellect, Logic, and Communication.  As the instrument of truth and decision-making, it cuts through illusion. This aligns with the Thinking process, used for analysis, definition, and objective judgment.
Helpful Tool: Think through a clear step by step plan for your manifestation.

  • The Pentacle (Earth): Representing Material Resources, Health, and the Physical Body.  This coin signifies grounding and tangible results. It corresponds to the Sensation function, which perceives immediate physical reality through the senses.
Helpful Tool: Implement your plan into actions to gain tangible results in the physical plane.

The Fifth Instrument: The Active Will Fuelled by Infinite Spirit

The "fifth" instrument is interpreted in two ways:

  1. The Held Wand (Active Will):  the Magician holds a second wand (or staff) in his raised hand, distinct from the one on the table. This represents the active application of will. While the tools on the table are potential, the wand in hand is required as the conduit for linking energy from the spiritual realm ("As Above") to the material realm ("So Below"). It signifies that the ego-mind must actively direct the other four elements to create manifestation.

  2. The Infinity Symbol: Hovering above the Magician’s head, or depicted on the magician hat the figure-eight symbol represents limitless potential of the Holy Spirit (or universal energy).  It is the "fifth element" (Quintessence or Aether) that binds together and brings life to the four physical elements. Without this infinite spiritual connection, and the magician’s intention and action (wand) the four tools on the table remain inert matter as opposed to the active tolls of manifestation.

The Table as the Conscious Field of Creation

The table itself symbolizes the conscious mind or the immediate field of awareness where these elements are organized.  Unlike the chaotic unconscious, the table presents these tools "like counters before the adept," indicating that the ego has arranged them for use. The fact that all four are present and equally accessible suggests that the Magician (the healthy ego) has mastered all four functions and is not dominated by just one.

Roses and Lilies

In many tarot decks the roses and lilies often depicted growing beneath the table symbolize the cultivation of aspiration (roses) and purity of intent (lilies) required to wield these tools effectively.

The Magician and the Shadow

Despite its association with mastery, The Magician retains a primordial link to the Trickster archetype.  It highlights the ego-mind connection to illusion, cunning, and the twisting of norms and natural laws. The Trickster element serves as a reminder that the power of ego-mind to create is also the power that is capable of deceit. Indeed, except for the few self-realised masters, we are all deceived by the Trickster-Mind by not being able to pierce through the illusory nature of Maya Reality as an Illusion and see clearly through the grand charm of the Magician’s creation.

The primary shadow aspects of The Magician include:

  • The Manipulator: Using intelligence, charm, and skill to control others or situations for selfish gain rather than collective good.

  • The Charlatan: Pretending to possess power or knowledge one does not actually have, relying on "smoke and mirrors" rather than substance.

  • The Intellectual: Over-relying on intellect and being lost in the labyrinth of mental stimulation fuels the ego that thrives on excessive thinking while disconnecting from emotional or spiritual realities, leading to a sterile, cold existence devoid of soul’s warmth, empathy, intuition, and love. Welcome to transhumanism and its new God - Science - the ultimate trickster of a new Era.

In conclusion, the Magician/Trickster Archetype alerts us to the areas in our life and within us where we lack creative vision and action needed to bring the vision into manifestation. It reminds us that the reality is a magic show, to help us learn not to take it all too seriously, and finally it warns us about the dangers of mind's excessive intellectualism that could lead us into a sterile world of sole-less existence.
