This painting was the first I’ve completed in six years!
Three feet by four feet, it stands tall and it marks a powerful return to my purpose. Watermelon Rich is more than a painting. It’s a declaration of freedom, creativity, and reclamation.
In the years following emancipation, newly freed Black entrepreneurs grew and sold watermelons as a means of independence and stability. It became a symbol of self-sufficiency—until that pride was twisted into ridicule. Through racist imagery and propaganda, our joy was mocked, and what once represented empowerment became a target of shame.
With Watermelon Rich, I’m restoring that symbol. I’m honoring the legacy of those early Black business owners and reminding us that creativity and enterprise are sacred rights. This painting stands for creative sovereignty—for reclaiming what was meant to humiliate and transforming it into power, beauty, and wealth.
