Abby Namazi is a figurative abstract artist who emigrated to America as a refugee, uprooted from his mother country, to begin a new journey here in the United States. Years of hardship and angst culminated in this spontaneous burst of artistic energy at the age of 84. To his art, he also adds a touch of spirituality. His art reflects these troubled times ... his strokes more bold, his colors more dark, yet vibrant giving hope always to calm.
Namazi has been painting only five years, yet he paints with mature, deft and confident brush strokes that one wouldn't expect from a 90 year old. With deliberately free strokes and a carefully selected palette of colors that reflects his tastes in traveling in diplomatic circles, Namazi captures the soul and spirit of the universe and its entanglements.
Perhaps most often compared to De Kooning whose strokes are more angular and with the appearance of the De Kooning woman, Namazi instead finds the democratization of space allows him to set his marks in so that the viewer can enter the painting at any point and view any part or all of it as though it were one experience.
Namazi has developed a uniquely distinctive style of interacting organic forms and picture planes drawn with sharp varied lines. Each drawing is a complete composition with bold and varied distinctive and playfully meaningful strokes/lines which vibrate with his choice of color. Each painting is a masterpiece awaiting discovery.
Aided and championed by his daughter, Susan who is an art history major he has his more than 800 works, the same number of paintings Van Gogh produced in the last productive year of his life, all cataloged, numbered and archived.
