I’m still based here in Ubon Ratchathani, hiding out in my airconned hostel room while nursing some war wounds… literally.
About a week ago, I took a tumble on some steps — nothing dramatic at the time, but the aftermath’s been a right pain in the arse (well, the leg). What started as two small wounds on my shin slowly turned into something that looked more “Walking Dead” than “Travel Vlogger”. One wound was healing okay-ish. The other? Red, swollen, stubborn, and downright moody.
After some advice from a British café owner nearby, I ended up at a local Thai clinic — and to be honest, it was an experience I won’t forget.
Before even seeing the doc, I had to fill out a proper form — name, nationality, contact info, even my waist measurement (still not sure why, but I guess it’s one way to humble a man). The place was packed out, yet somehow I was fast-tracked past everyone like some pale wounded VIP.
The young female doctor spoke amazing English — especially considering this wasn’t some international hospital, just a standard Thai walk-in clinic. She was calm, sharp, totally professional, and didn’t bat an eyelid at my battered legs.
She cleaned both wounds, gave me a tetanus injection, prescribed antibiotics, paracetamol, and ibuprofen. The whole lot — appointment, meds, jab — came to just 600 baht (that’s about £13). I’ve had pub lunches cost more than that.
So now I’m back in my room, stocked with gauze, tape, tablets, and 7-Eleven snacks, resting up and letting the meds do their thing. I’ll share some pics soon — if you’re into scabby legs and sexy dressings (you know who you are).
