A Plane in the Forest #FlashFicFeb

Feb 28, 2022

Once, while on a hike, I happened upon a plane in the forest.  The strange thing about his plane was that it seemed undamaged, though the trees around it were tall.  There was no damage to said trees either.  The plane appeared to be clean as well, so I knew it hadn’t been there long, or that someone was taking care of the appearance of the plane.  I am unsure how the plane came to be in the forest in the first place, but there it was.

After looking around at the plane, I climbed up to the door of the aircraft.  I peeked through, and much to my surprise it appeared that there was someone living inside.  There were no seats, as one would expect.  Instead, it was more like the interior of a house.  I saw a fireplace, some couches and all manner of creature comforts one might experience living in the city.  I knocked but no one answered.  I paused for a moment, lost in the feeling of excitement and trepidation and tried the door handle.  It opened.

I cautiously poked my head in and called out, inquiring if anyone was home.  No one answered.  After a few moments, I decided to check the place out.  I wandered up and down the aircraft-turned-home and marveled at the contents of this plane in the forest.  There was a small dancefloor, what was clearly 3 separate bedrooms and even a kitchen with a wood stove.  Someone had made this plane a home, deep within the woods.  I couldn’t fathom why.  That is…  Until I went downstairs.

The first room on the bottom floor of the aircraft was something akin to a butcher’s room.  At first, I saw things one might expect to see.  There was a tanning rack, a butcher’s block fashioned from a tree stump, and the tools one would expect from someone who processes meats.  One could see pelts all around the room.  I saw a door at the other end of the room and slowly approached it.  I knocked once more.  Again, there was no answer.  I poked my head in and found myself in a freezer.  Meat hung from the ceiling all around the room.  I realized that I hadn’t seen a refrigerator, so this made sense to me.  What didn’t make sense was the door at the other end of the room.  I had to find out what was behind it.

I slowly opened the door…  What I saw made my stomach turn, and I nearly threw up then and there.  In this room, also a freezer, I saw the bodies of men, women and children hanging from the ceiling the same as the bodies of deer and turkeys in the previous room.  I slammed the door and ran back through the game freezer and into the meat processing room.  That’s when I stopped cold.  At the other end of the room by the stairs, the only other way in and out of the room, was a group of people.  They stood, staring with unblinking faces that seemed not to move.  Then…  All at once, they smiled and raised their cleaver clutching hands.
