In today's fast-paced digital world, meaningful conversations are more crucial than ever. Without actively striving for truth and better tools to counter misinformation, humanity risks fracturing into increasingly smaller echo chambers of pseudoscience, fake news, and disinformation. Whether in personal discussions, academic debates, or professional collaborations, the ability to analyze and construct strong arguments is an essential skill in the communication age.

However, fostering logical and respectful discourse isn’t easy - especially if you’re not a trained logician or critical-thinking expert. That’s where Aristotle comes in. Designed to streamline argument analysis, Aristotle provides a shared foundation for discussions while addressing some of the chaos introduced by social media. Our mission is to help build a better world - not just mentally, but also in the digital spaces where ideas are exchanged.

Looking ahead, we envision Aristotle as more than just a tool for argument analysis. Future iterations will serve as an integrated critical-thinker for everyone packaged as a browser extension capable of analysing any text anywhere, helping us navigate the cognitive biases and misinformation traps that challenge human understanding. Together, we can make meaningful discourse the cornerstone of a more informed and connected society.

The Inspiration Behind Aristotle

We are two programmers that love Science and coding. Gonçalo works for an non-profit as an AI research engineer. Timen works for a company that builds software used in automatically identifying images of potential crimes. We studied AI in our Bachelors together at the university of Groningen and have always been passionate about debating and argument. Which is what led us to several discord servers aimed at just that. But, after more than 5 years of participating in discussions (some times with world renown researchers and writers!) we noticed a huge problem. People tend to speak past each other. People seldomly agree on a basis before they start building up a conversation which is bound to fall on its shaky legs. People are not good at catching fallacies and biases - be it in their own speech or in others. And most important of all, people want to improve and become better at conversing and arguing!

As avid members of various online communities, we noticed a growing need for tools that can help individuals refine their arguments, detect logical fallacies, and foster productive discussions. Traditional moderation tools often fall short in providing nuanced feedback on the quality of arguments, leaving conversations susceptible to misunderstandings and unproductive debates. There's also a lot of bias underlying mod's reactions and decisions regarding user participation.

Inspired by Aristotle's profound contributions to logic and rhetoric, we set out to create a Discord bot that embodies his principles. Our goal was to develop a tool that not only assists users in crafting stronger arguments but also promotes critical thinking and respectful dialogue within online communities while giving them a much needed common ground.

Steelman: Strengthens arguments to their fullest potential, making them more persuasive.

Counter Argument: Generates strong counter-arguments to challenge opposing views.

Decompose: Breaks down arguments into premises and conclusions for detailed analysis.

Detect Fallacies: Identifies logical fallacies to ensure sound reasoning.

Evaluate Argument: Assesses the validity and consistency of your arguments.

Fact Check: Verifies the factual accuracy of your premises and claims.

Premise Analysis: Analyzes premises for potential weaknesses or falsifications.

Extract Arguments: Extracts multiple arguments from a block of text for further examination.

Debate generator: It shortly introduces a topic and produces two opposing positions that people can start off from and have fun debating!

Settle dispute: Although contentious, we want to see how far we can push AI to serve as a 3rd party mediator in online communities, that's why we are trying to use Aristotle as a dispute settler by having it evaluate and mediate different parties that participate in debates/arguments.

Print & Download Books: Offers excerpts from Aristotle's books and allows downloads for offline reading.

Developing and maintaining a sophisticated tool like Aristotle requires significant resources. We also want to open a company so that we can keep pushing for more and better tools that help humans get their tasks done quicker and better so that we can all enjoy more freetime and reap the fruits of the AI revolution. Developing Aristotle up up and away! We are developing Aristotle as an extension too, so that you can just critically analyse any piece of text anywhere on your browser. The next big step for Aristotle.bot is to develop its TTV and VTT capacities (text-to-voice and voice-to-text) so that you can actually have Aristotle as a conversational agent in your virtual environments.

We have recently launched Aristotle on the Pangburn Discord server. We believe that Aristotle really has the power to transform their discussions, debates, and critical thinking processes. We are truly inspired by how large language models (LLMs) have enabled us to create such a powerful tool. By leveraging advanced AI models, Aristotle can break down complex arguments into clear premises and conclusions, fact-check claims, and even propose counterarguments—all in real-time. Improve AI Models: Continuously refine Aristotle’s AI backend, leveraging advancements in LLM technology to deliver even more accurate and insightful analyses and even train our own for our logical pursuit purposes.
