Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Antonelli both took grid penalties for infringements in the final part of qualifying, with Lewis impeding Oscar Piastri and Kimi being penalised for not lifting enough for the yellow flags for Max Verstappen's spin. That promoted Charles Leclerc to the front row. Sergio Perez started from the pitlane
With both Ferraris starting on soft tyres, both Leclerc and Hamilton would have hoped that they would benefit at the start but it was Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen who got the drop on Charles, with the two Ferraris and the lead Red Bull three abreast into turn 1. George Russell had a shocking start, hitting anti-stall and dropping way down the order. Fortunately with the new regulation cars, it's possible to follow closely and overtake and he started to charge his way through the field.
Norris ran wide letting Piastri through into the lead, while Verstappen was hounded relentlessly by Hamilton for lap after lap, but Lewis could find no way past despite the better tyres earlier in the race and Ferrari pulled the trigger early, pitting for hards at a track where the undercut is very powerful. That forced the hand of Red Bull, and Verstappen pitted, but Hamilton had come out in traffic, and while the undercut had worked Max managed to make a move on Lewis on fresher tyres.
Valtteri Bottas retired in the pitlane with brake issues, bringing out yellow flags, Oscar Piastri was told to stay out. Lando Norris had wanted to pit even earlier, aware that the undercut promised to work in Verstappen's favour, but the McLaren internal rules gave Oscar the priority. Lando pitted shortly after, giving the lead to Kimi Antonelli who had yet to stop and looked like he might be trying a one-stop strategy.
Hamilton once again pitted first among the leaders, forcing the hand of McLaren who brought in Piastri. Both Lewis and Oscar had come out in traffic though, with Piastri being clipped by Carlos Sainz while lapping the Williams, earning Carlos a five second penalty. Both lost time to the point that when Norris made his second stop, he came out ahead of Piastri and in the net lead. Max Verstappen now led the race on track, but had yet to make his second stop and when he did, he chose what appeared at the time to be a very risky strategy - a long final stint on soft tyres. Max came out side by side with Charles Leclerc but the fresher and softer rubber gave the advantage to Red Bull.
Kimi Antonelli now lead again, but Norris and Piastri were closing him down at a rate of knots and it was only a matter of time before Lando was past the Mercedes and in to the lead. Serio Perez suffered a track rod failure and managed to limp the second Cadillac back to the pits to retire.
Mercedes knew the one-stop was no longer viable and called Kimi in for a second set of hard tyres, dropping him down the order, but when Oscar Piastri's McLaren pulled over with gearbox failure, the virtual safety car was deployed and Norris, Hamilton and Leclerc took advantage for a cheap pit stop on to soft tyres to the end. Lewis came out side by side with Kimi and managed to take the position, but was told to give the place back to avoid a potential penalty. It proved to be a moot point however, as Hamilton later received a five second penalty for speeding in the pitlane. Despite this, he kept Antonelli in close company and the pair started hunting down Max Verstappen for second place, although traffic once again came in to play, losing both enough time to secure Max's position.
Lando Norris held on to get his and McLaren's first victory of the season ahead of Max Verstappen, who had managed to nurse his soft tyres to the end. Kimi Antonelli managed to hold off any challenge from Lewis Hamilton for the final podium place, while Charles Leclerc inherited fourth from Hamilton once the penalty had been taken into account. Isack Hadjar finished sixth after doing a sterling job supporting Max by holding up his competition, while George Russell managed to recover from his awful start to finish seventh. The two Racing Bulls of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad both scored points, albeit a lap down, in eighth and tenth respectively, separated by the Audi of Nico Hulkenberg who finally broke his duck.
