Who was ... Friedensreich Hundertwasser?

Who was ... Friedensreich Hundertwasser?

Dec 16, 2021

Friedensreich Hundertwasser was an Austrian artist and architect. He was born on December 15th, 1928 in Vienna, and died February 19th, 2000 on board the Queen Elizabeth 2, near Brisbane.

Hundertwasser was born as Friedrich Stowasser to a Jewish mother and Catholic father. During WWII he and his mother pretended to be Christians. After the war, he started signing his art work with "Hundertwasser". The 'sto' in his original last name is Slavic and means "one (hundred)", making his new name "Hundertwasser", meaning "hundred water". He also changed his first name from "Friedrich" (Frederic) to "Friedensreich" consisting of "Frieden" (peace) and "reich" (rich or realm). His two new middle names were "Regentag" (rain day) and "Dunkelbunt" (dark colorful).

His most known art work is the "Hundertwasserhaus" in Vienna. It is a good example of his rejection of straight lines, and his preference of bright colors and organic forms. Many of his designs, and buildings inspired by him can be seen around the world.
