Harbinger of Spring - Daffodils or Narzissen

Mar 18, 2021

Mini-Narzissen. Mini daffodils. The German name ๐—ก๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜‡๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฒ comes from the Greek word narkein and means ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ฎฬˆ๐˜‚๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ป or โ€žto narcotizeโ€œ or โ€žto sedateโ€œ.

For the English word โ€žanesthesiaโ€œ, Germans use ๐—ก๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ธ๐—ผ๐˜€๐—ฒ.

If you wondering if you are going to pass out from smelling your daffodils, the answer is probably not. However, the white daffodils (๐—ช๐—ฒ๐—ถรŸ๐—ฒ ๐—ก๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜‡๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฒ or ๐——๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜‡๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฒ (poet daffodil)) have an intense smell, and since they are the ones native to the Mediterranean it makes sense that the Greeks and Romans chose the name ๐—ก๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜‡๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฒ.

But what about the word ๐—ข๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ด๐—น๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ธ๐—ฒ (Easter bell)? Isnโ€˜t that the same? Technically speaking, a ๐—ข๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ด๐—น๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ธ๐—ฒ is a ๐—ก๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜‡๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฒ but not every ๐—ก๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜‡๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฒ is a ๐—ข๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ด๐—น๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ธ๐—ฒ.

But honestly, I would use both terms for the yellow daffodil interchangably. Though, Iโ€˜m not a gardener.

What do you call the flower in the picture?
