What's the value of having a mentor?

What's the value of having a mentor?

Apr 08, 2025

I'm someone who loves using real-world analogies to help make a point (about Agile theory, or to simplify a business challenge in terms that everyone can agree on).

"Mentoring is like therapy"

said someone very insightfully to me recently.

"You tend to only need it when you're already in crisis!".

We then proceeded to question whether the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK, is really more like the National Illness Service - in that it predominantly treats people that are already in some form of crisis.imageI do go off at tangents with my analogies, I've been told, from time to time. So I'm going to haul myself back to the point...

Mentoring is best used day-to-day, week-to-week, month-to-month as a prevention of crises occurring.

When it's used ad-hoc to help deal with a specific 'today' problem, it's less effective than when it's used to plot a more strategic path through the medium and longer-term futures.
