The Nikon Z5IIC was launched 24th September 2026 & FISH subject detection was a new feature implemented in this mirrorless camera.
Thanks to Nikon Singapore, I took the Z5IIC Silver version for a spin at the Singapore Oceanarium testing & stressing the FISH subject detection photographing various sea creatures in very low light & low contrast environments.
Check out the results here where you can see the Z5IIC's EVF recording showing the AF tracking performance with FISH subject detection on various sea creatures from jellyfish, sharks to Lion fish.

In summary
FISH subject detection really works & works very well
Works on a good variety of sea creatures including eels, jellyfish
Works even if subject was back-facing or was swimming away
Detection was precise & works well even in very low light & low contrast environments.
Though FISH as a subject is NOT mainstream, this would still be useful for underwater photographers or for those photographing aquatic creatures in aquariums or oceanariums.
