Fuji X100V, “The Jack of all trades” camera for photographers?

A 3-year documentation, and experimentation with the Fuji X100V, my personal review.

As a photographer, whether you’re starting or have been doing it for years now, you tend to ask yourself what might be the best camera for your everyday carry. I’ve been using the X100V since 2020 and it’s a camera I carry religiously every day with me, regardless of where I am going.

One of the most significant improvements on the X100V compared to its predecessors is the updated sensor, which provides better image quality and more detail in low-light situations. The camera also features a fast and accurate autofocus system, making it easy to capture sharp images even in fast-moving situations.

The X100V also features a unique hybrid viewfinder, which allows you to switch between an optical viewfinder and an electronic viewfinder depending on your shooting style. This feature is particularly useful for photographers who prefer the traditional feel of an optical viewfinder, but also want the convenience of an electronic viewfinder when shooting in low light or when framing shots.

In terms of design, the X100V has a classic retro look that will appeal to many photographers. The camera is also weather-sealed, making it suitable for shooting in challenging conditions.

One of the only downsides to the X100V is its fixed lens, which may not be ideal for photographers who prefer to switch lenses depending on the situation. However, the 23mm f/2 lens is versatile enough to capture a wide range of shots, from landscapes to portraits.

Overall, the Fujifilm X100V is an excellent camera for photographers who value compact size, image quality, and versatility. Its combination of a fast lens, accurate autofocus, and unique hybrid viewfinder makes it a top choice for street photographers, travel photographers, and anyone who wants a high-quality camera that is easy to carry around.

With that all being stated, it was a challenge to genuinely accustom myself to using a nearly full manual system. Which in my perspective was the greatest obstacle to elevate my photography skills. It makes it both a challenge and enjoyable whether you want to acquire creative, journalistic, or everyday shots.

This camera has been with me all around the world, tallying more milage than I could’ve hoped to acquire and taking some of my greatest shots. It is a force to be reckoned with and for any photographer willing to take on the challenge, it will be a sweet one to overcome.

Here are some examples of different photographic styles that can be achieved with the X100V.

“The Simple Catch”, Fisherman in the Colorado River, Austin, Texas. Summer 2022. Spontaneous Shot, Between getting the camera ready and shooting the shot, I had enough time before the man would’ve moved. Which allowed me to capture a candid shot for authenticity.

“Reflecting Lights” Erasmus Bridge, Rotterdam, South Holland. Autumn 2021. Long Exposure 10 seconds. I set the camera on the railing on the overlook platform to get a firm position without using a tripod as well as to give it a point-of-view perspective allowing the viewer to share the sight with the photographer.

“Eye on the Horizon”: Man overlooking the sunset over the Austin skyline. Austin, Texas. Summer 2023. Multiple-Exposure (2 Times) and White Balance experimentation, I leaned towards the darker red pigmentation in the white balance to dramatize the shot.

“Peace in the Greens and Blues”, Amsterdamsebos, Amsterdam, North Holland. Late Summer 2020. This photo has an in-depth meaning to me as it was captured right after the first lockdown was lifted in the Netherlands. I had climbed out of the “lake” into our recreational area, and as I was drying myself I couldn’t but rejoice at the sound of people’s laughter, arguments, music playing, and hearing the oars splash against the water as a kayaker came along. I looked up and thought that this moment was one for the books (so to speak), ironically also strengthened my idea for a project I’ve been doing since 2020, regarding Urban Nature.
