Dear Tree Lovers
This has to be one of my favourite woods. Despite its' popularity the woods here are remarkably welcoming and imbue you with a deep sense of peace.
Walk with me, as me and Bella take a stroll.
Of note here are the Birch Tree woods whose trees support a wide variety of fungi and other life. Their delicate shade means other plants have enough light to grow by underneath. These Birch are a very important part of the local ecology. There's a group of lovely Scots Pines too and some good sized Oaks mainly around the edges. Willows shade the lakeside where you can meet the enormous carp who swim right up to the edge of the lake. On the water you can see Grebes, swans, geese and more.
As children we used to paddle and swim here as people had for many decades, but now of course the council has since decided it is too dangerous to swim here. This has been an area popular with locals for a long time, my mother used to ride through here as a girl. Onsite there used to be a beautiful full grown Willow arbour children and adults used to love wandering through, but it was cut down for no apparent purpose!! It was an ideal play space and saved the woods from being damaged elsewhere. Clearly this was not very well thought through! On a more positive note however, some places in the park are seeing an expansion of shrubs and small trees as places to encourage small birds for example, with active encouragement for people to stick to main paths in order to protect the woodland floor. Heathland is also being encouraged in places.
Buzzard flies overhead and Crow keeps an eye. If you are lucky you might hear a Green Woodpecker laughing among the trees or a Brimstone butterfly flit by. In my film you will see an example of what is called here in Cheshire a 'moss' i.e. swamp or marsh. Besides heathland this is also an increasingly rare habitat.
Every time I visit here I leave feeling replenished and recharged and I hope from seeing this film that you will too.
