In 2020, during Covid, I decided to return to a hobby I had loved when I was 10 years old. My goal was to show my little son that we can change the things around us. The first candidate became the Ikea Lillabo Locomotive, because it has excellent quality compared to other similar toys—and nobody had done it before.
I must admit, a lot of things have changed since I last touched this hobby many years ago.
The good thing is that now there’s plenty of information available about how to make what you want. So, this is our turn to share with the community.
The downside is that it takes a lot of time and some equipment — but it’s worth it to have fun and share the results with others. Even simple efforts can become a source of inspiration for other people.

P.S. This project was the starting point for creating a fully 3D-printed locomotive. We faced many mechanical challenges—for example, how to make it climb from the ground floor to the first floor on rails, what material to use for the wheels, how to build the tires, and how to ensure good contact with the rails...
