THINKCAR THINKSCAN 689BT Review: What Two Diesels Taught Me

Oct 02, 2026

I tested the THINKCAR THINKSCAN 689BT, a bi-directional scan tool, on two diesel cars: a 2007 Opel Astra H 1.9 CDTI and a 2009 VW Golf 5 1.9 TDI. This is the short version. The full review has the specs, photos and every test.

What worked

  • Connection and full scan on the Astra took about four minutes, with no communication errors.

  • On the Golf, I ran bi-directional tests on the EGR valve (N18), the radiator fan and the other engine-bay actuators. All of them responded correctly.

  • ECU coding solved a real problem. The Astra had weak charging at 800 RPM. Raising idle to 850 RPM through coding brought charging into better parameters.

What I could not test

  • The Astra has its EGR, DPF and throttle valve deleted, so those actuator tests had nothing to command.

  • I ran no maintenance resets and did not generate the PDF health report.

  • CAN-FD, DoIP and FCA AutoAuth support comes from the spec sheet. I had no vehicle with a secured gateway.

Who it fits
Mobile mechanics and independent garages who want bi-directional control without a dealer-level tablet. If you only read and clear codes now and then, a cheaper reader is enough.

One practical tip: it ships without a screen protector. Apply one on day one.
