Author Alex Andrade-Walz grew up searching for authentic representation in literature. Finding few queer narratives that resonated with his experience, he made a promise to write the stories his younger self desperately needed.

The Academy For Broken Boys is that story.

At a time when anti-LGBTQ legislation is surging nationwide and conversion therapy remains legal for minors in 27 states, authentic stories become more than entertainment: they're essential tools for education and support. LGBTQ youth facing family rejection or institutional "treatment" need to see characters like Eli, Maria, and Ollie proving that identity isn't illness, that love without conditions is possible, and that they aren't alone. These stories validate experiences that are too often dismissed or pathologized, offering hope when the world feels impossibly hostile.

The book is written just as much for parents and lawmakers as it is for LGBTQ youth, bridging all three worlds through storytelling that transforms abstract policy debates into deeply human questions: What kind of society do we want to be? How do we protect our most vulnerable young people? And how can literature help us choose love over fear?
