Welcome to Ancient Jesus/Future Faith, where we are building the future of our faith by digging deep into the words, context, and time of Jesus.
Our project is to create a path forward after Evangelicalism by giving everyone the tools and resources to (re)discover the ancient Jesus who inspired a movement that could change the world. We do this by producing a podcast, live streams, webinars, courses, and other content. BMAC members will receive exclusive updates on our project progress. While we can't promise other perks right now, we do promise to privilege our BMAC members for limited-seating events.
Why This Project?
It has been clear for quite some time that biblical literacy is lacking in Christian circles. Though the bible was put in the hands of “the people” with the advent of the printing press, existing power structures kept people dependent on preachers, pastors, and priests to interpret the words on the page. Translations of and commentaries on the Bible were often created with the intent of leading people to a particular interpretation. Even now, many Christian leaders preach in such a way that keeps them securely in power and free from scrutiny (often without even realizing they are doing so) – ignoring Jesus’s real messages about peace, helping the poor, and fighting injustice.
Somewhere along the way, we the people lost our ability to study the Bible and understand it without gatekeepers, which has brought Christianity to a breaking point. Jesus has been buried in layers of misunderstandings, bad interpretations, and, most egregiously, purposeful manipulations of His teachings for personal or political gain. Without the tools to remove these layers, many Christians are left dissatisfied with their faith. They feel condemned by their fellow Christians. They suffer in silence. Ultimately, many leave the Church.
This is why we do what we do. Whether you believe Evangelicalism can be redeemed or not (we're not totally sure ourselves), it is clear that something needs to change. We want to be a part of that change, to inspire that change, to give people the tools to make that change.
We hope you'll join us!
