Color correcting using a script

Color correcting using a script

Jun 23, 2024

Prior to Illustrator CS4, it was possible to control color channel values for multiple objects at once. For example, if you enter a value of 100 for Red, it would change for all objects, while Green and Blue would remain the same for each object. As of CS5 2010, this feature has disappeared: by entering a value in one of the fields in the Color panel, we get a new identical color on all objects, based on the last active color.

The script returns channel-by-channel color control of fills and strokes to Illustrator:

  1. Enter the exact numerical values of the RGB or CMYK color channels;

  2. Apply the mathematical operations of addition (+), subtraction (-), multiplication (), and division (/) to edit colors. For example, 2 - multiply the current channel value by two, +10 - add ten.

  3. Calculate channel values relative to others by name. For example, R: G/3 - assign the red channel value to the green channel value divided by three.

Alternative tools

  • The paid plugin Phantasm edits, like Photoshop, brightness, contrast, exposure, hue and saturation. You can't set exact values.

  • The free extensions Colorist, Color Tweaker can only increase or decrease RGB channel values and do not work in CMYK mode.
