Dec 11, 2024

This week, we're looking at the Rolex 24h at Daytona from 2024. All of these are from the practice sessions on Thursday and Friday. I find that I'm able to get some of the best single-car photos on practice days because there's not as many people fighting for spots along the fence, and the car I'm looking for isn't in a battle for position with another team.

The first photo is of the #9 Pfaff Motorsport McLaren in GTD Pro holding off the #23 Heart of Racing Aston Martin GTD as they dive into the braking zone at Turn 5. If you want this shot yourself, put yourself on the fence at RV spot 304. You have to shoot through 2 fences, so a long lens is a must here. I used my 500mm f/4 for this one.

The second one is of the Paul Miller Racing #1 BMW M4 in GTD Pro going around the high banking at NASCAR 2. This one was with my 70-200 f/2.8 at 200mm. Your best bet here is to get above the fences using a stepstool and make sure that the NASCAR lights on the inside of the corner don’t obscure your subject. The cars here are going close to 150mph or more, so a super slow shutter speed isn’t necessary for this one.

The final shot is of the #24 BMW GTP going into turn 1, from up in the grandstands. The grandstands don’t open until Friday, so this was my first time being able to take photos up there. It definitely gives some super unique angles. Once again, you’re going to want a long lens for this. I believe that I was in the 385 or 485 section for this one.
