Crafting Effective Writing Prompts: Strategies and Techniques

Aug 24, 2023

So if you recall, we discussed that there are 3 methods for generating great results:

  1. The Expert Approach: Start a new chat conversation and ask ChatGPT to act as an expert in your topic/industry/niche/skill. Then, write out your prompt and continue giving ChatGPT more tasks since it has context on who it is.

  2. The Contextual Approach: Keep the same chat conversation but specify the role ChatGPT is undertaking within the context of your task/project.

  3. The Frontloaded Approach: Frontload ChatGPT with all the necessary information (using a Creative Brief, for example) about your project/task and its role, and then give it requests directly without specifying who it is since it already knows. This can be done in the same chat conversation or a separate one.

There is no right or wrong approach. It all depends on your goals, needs, and situation.

The importance of Tones, Voice, & Style

Your tone, voice, and style are important elements and help to differentiate you from others. By including these elements in the prompt or asking ChatGPT to rewrite a text using your tone, voice, and style, you can ensure that the content generated is consistent with you. Combining Tones, Voice, and Style

In summary, tone is the attitude or mood of the content, voice is the personality or character of the writer, and style is the overall presentation of the content, including layout, design, and formatting. Understanding the difference between these three elements is important for creating content that effectively conveys your message and resonates with your audience.

Length

When you're working with ChatGPT, it's important to tell it the length of the output you're looking for. For example, if you're asking for a blog post, you might want to specify a word count range, such as 500 to 1000 words. Similarly, if you're asking for social media posts, you might want to specify a maximum character count. By doing this, you can ensure that the output from ChatGPT meets your requirements and is the right length for the platform you're publishing on.

In addition to specifying the length of the output, it's also important to ensure that ChatGPT has written everything you need. For example, if you've asked for a list of 50 email topics to write about, you might want to check that ChatGPT has provided the full list. If it stops at, say, 36 topics, simply ask ChatGPT to continue writing by typing "continue writing" or "keep going." This will prompt ChatGPT to generate additional content until it reaches the desired number of topics. By providing clear instructions and feedback, you can work collaboratively with ChatGPT to get the results you need.

Include an example that ChatGPT could follow if you have one

Including examples in your prompts can be a great way to guide ChatGPT and ensure that the generated content meets your expectations. For instance, if you're asking ChatGPT to generate social media posts, you might provide a few examples of posts that you've found effective in the past. This can help ChatGPT understand the tone, style, and messaging that you're looking for. Similarly, if you're asking ChatGPT to write product descriptions, you might provide a sample description or two that you like, so that ChatGPT can model its output after them. By including examples in your prompts, you can give ChatGPT a better sense of what you're looking for and increase the chances of getting high-quality output that meets your needs.

Here's an example of a prompt that includes an example:

"I'm looking for a social media post to promote my new line of sneakers. Here's an example of a post that I like: 'Step up your shoe game with our sleek new sneakers! Perfect for running, lifting, or just looking stylish. Available now in a range of colors.' Can you help me write some more posts like this, using a similar tone and messaging?"

The Secret to 10x Smarter Responses - Use Expert Personas (Act as / Pretend you are “Someone”)

Using expert personas in your prompts can be a powerful way to guide ChatGPT and ensure that the generated content is of high quality. By asking ChatGPT to "act as" or "pretend to be" a specific expert or authority figure, you can help it understand the tone, language, and messaging that would resonate with your audience. For example, if you're asking ChatGPT to generate blog post ideas for a personal finance blog, you might ask it to "act as a financial advisor" or "pretend to be an expert in personal finance." This will help ChatGPT understand the level of expertise and authority that your content should convey, and can result in more engaging and informative output.

Here's an example prompt that uses an expert persona:

"Act as a nutritionist and provide me with some healthy recipes for busy moms. These recipes should be easy to make, nutritious, and appealing to children. I'm looking for 5-10 recipes that are perfect for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Can you help me out?"

The example prompt is a very simple one. I love using a more detailed prompt that goes over specific details about what makes that nutritionist exceptional.

For example, I would say something along the lines of “Pretend you are a world star Nutritionist. Celebrities and c-level executives around the world hire you for your expert advice. When it comes to healthy recipes for busy individuals, no one is better than you. Do you understand who you are?”

Classification AI

If you're trying to generate content that matches the tone, voice, and style of a particular text, it can be helpful to inform ChatGPT that it is a classification AI and that it should use natural language processing (NLP) to analyze the text in order to identify these characteristics. This can help ChatGPT understand the nuances of the text and generate output that matches the desired style and tone. For example, if you want ChatGPT to generate blog post ideas that match the tone and style of an existing blog post, you might inform ChatGPT that it is a classification AI and ask it to analyze the text of the blog post to determine the tone, voice, and style being used. With this information, you can craft a prompt that specifically asks ChatGPT to generate content that matches these characteristics, resulting in more targeted and effective output.

Here is an example prompt: “

"ChatGPT, pretend like you are a classification AI. Please analyze the text below and determine the key characteristics of the tone, voice, and style being used. Can you help me out?"

Act as Prompts (Professions)

When it comes to writing prompts, there are many free resources available, including repositories of prompt examples that people are using. Personally, I love writing my own “Act as Prompts” because I love going all in. Here is an example of a ‘pretend prompt’: “I want you to pretend like you're the world's best content writer. Companies around the world pay you thousands to write a single blog post. You are the best of the best. You know how to research and write blog posts from scratch to finish. You’re an SEO Expert too. Your blog posts attract visitors non-stop. Do you understand who you are?”

I love telling ChatGPT that it’s the world's best at [x something]. You should do the same too.

Elements of Writing

Sometimes the output generated by ChatGPT can be generic or lack the level of expressiveness that you're looking for. In these cases, it can be helpful to provide a follow-up prompt that specifically asks ChatGPT to be more expressive and incorporate certain writing elements. For example, you might ask ChatGPT to

  • use rhetorical questions to hook the reader, or include similes, metaphors, personification, idioms, onomatopoeias, and emojis to add interest and creativity to the content.

  • instruct ChatGPT to use the modes of persuasion, such as ethos, pathos, logos, and kairos, to create content that is more compelling and persuasive.

By including these writing elements in your prompt, you can help ChatGPT generate output that is more expressive and engaging, resulting in content that better meets your needs.

Unconventional and thought-provoking content

If you're looking to generate unconventional or thought-provoking content, or you want to challenge assumptions and provide alternative perspectives, it can be helpful to ask ChatGPT to generate examples that contradict the dominant narrative. By doing so, you can encourage ChatGPT to think outside the box and generate content that is unexpected, controversial, or even contrarian.

Example: “"Hey ChatGPT, I'm looking to create some thought-provoking content that challenges the dominant narrative around [topic]. Can you help me by generating some examples that go against the conventional wisdom? I'm looking for content that is unconventional, unexpected, and potentially even controversial.”

New angles and uncommon ideas and novel ways

Additionally, if you want to come up with new angles, uncommon ideas, or novel ways to approach a particular topic, you can ask ChatGPT to provide suggestions or generate content that explores different perspectives or ideas. By asking ChatGPT to generate unconventional or original content, you can expand ChatGPT’s output and potentially uncover new insights or approaches that you might not have gotten otherwise.

Example: “Hey ChatGPT, I'm trying to come up with some new and original ideas for my [blog post, article, social media post, etc.] on [topic]. Can you help me generate some unconventional angles, ideas, or perspectives on this topic? I'm looking for content that breaks the mold and explores new ground.”

Output Formats

It's important to remember that ChatGPT can generate output in a variety of formats depending on your needs. Whether you're looking for a detailed essay, a concise list of bullet points, or something in between, ChatGPT can help. By varying the format of your output requests, you can encourage ChatGPT to approach the task in different ways, potentially leading to more creative or innovative content. Some examples of different output formats you might consider include stories, outlines, case studies, tweets, tables, and the classic journalistic structure of who, what, why, how, and when. By experimenting with different formats and structures, you can find the ones that work best for your content needs and generate output that is tailored to your specific requirements.

Example prompt: “ChatGPT, I want you to generate a table that summarizes the key differences between our product and our competitors' products. Please use the following column headers: Product Name, Features, Price, Availability, Customer Reviews. Make sure to provide at least five rows for different products, and use concise and easy-to-read language.”

Make ChatGPT sound Human

To make ChatGPT sound more like a human, there are a few things you can do. One approach is to incorporate more colloquial language, contractions, and informal phrases in your prompts. Additionally, using specific and personal anecdotes can make the content feel more human and relatable. You can also ask ChatGPT to use a specific tone or voice that matches your brand or personal style. Another option is to ask ChatGPT to use humor, sarcasm, or irony in its output. However, it's important to note that while these strategies may help make ChatGPT sound more like a human, it's still an AI-generated output and may not pass as human-generated text in all cases. Again, refer to the Hemingway Editing method we covered earlier in the section “ChatGPT’s Limitation.”

Make ChatGPT reason with itself by adding the phrase “Let’s explain step by step”

Adding the phrase “Let’s explain step by step” to your prompt can be a useful way to make ChatGPT reason with itself and provide a more thorough, logical explanation. This technique can be particularly helpful when you want ChatGPT to walk through a complex process or concept in a clear and concise manner. By prompting ChatGPT to explain step by step, you can encourage it to break down complex ideas into smaller, more digestible pieces, which can ultimately help to improve the quality and clarity of its output.

Example Prompt: "ChatGPT, let's explain step by step how someone can start their own podcast. Assume that the target audience is beginners who have never started a podcast before. Can you provide a clear and concise guide that breaks down the process into simple, easy-to-follow steps?"

Using Ranking and Identifying Options with ChatGPT

ChatGPT has the ability to rank and identify options based on certain criteria. By using specific phrases such as "Identify each x as x, x, or x," you can prompt ChatGPT to rank and explain its choices. For example, if you are analyzing an argument and want ChatGPT to identify each choice as either strengthening, weakening, or having no impact on the argument, you can use the prompt "Identify each choice as strengthening, weakens, or doesn't impact the argument, and explain why." This type of prompting allows ChatGPT to analyze and compare options in a systematic and structured manner, providing clear explanations for its choices.

Example prompt: “ChatGPT, let's rank these options and explain why you made those choices. Please identify each choice as an advantage, disadvantage, or neutral factor in terms of achieving our project goals. Let's explain step by step why you came to those conclusions."

Requesting Evidence-Based Output from ChatGPT

When you want ChatGPT to support your argument with evidence or examples, it can be helpful to ask it to provide reasons or explanations for its answer. You can use prompts like "Can you provide evidence to support your answer?" or "Please include an example to illustrate your point." Additionally, you can ask ChatGPT to use careful reasoning when explaining its answer, using prompts like "Can you explain your reasoning in detail?" or "Why do you think that is the best solution?" By asking ChatGPT to provide evidence and use careful reasoning in its output, you can ensure that the content is well-supported and thoughtfully considered.

Example Prompt: “I want you to provide an argument for why [topic]. Please include at least three pieces of evidence to support your argument, and use careful reasoning to explain your answer.”

The Importance of Clarity in Writing ChatGPT Prompts

Clear and direct prompts are essential for getting the most out of ChatGPT. Avoiding jargon and ambiguity can help ensure that ChatGPT understands what you're asking for and can deliver an output that meets your needs. When writing a prompt, it's helpful to be as clear and concise as possible, using simple language and straightforward phrasing. This can help you avoid misunderstandings and make it easier for ChatGPT to deliver the results you're looking for. Additionally, providing examples and being specific about what you're looking for can also help ensure that the output you receive is relevant and useful.

Clear Prompt: "I want a product description for my new electric toothbrush. Please include the benefits and features of the product, as well as any unique selling points. Keep the tone conversational and upbeat, and make sure to avoid technical jargon."

Ambiguous Prompt: "Can you write a blog post about productivity? I want it to be engaging and informative, but also not too long. It should be written in a friendly tone and include examples. Oh, and make sure it's SEO-friendly."

In the ambiguous prompt, the requester hasn't provided clear guidelines on the specific topic to be covered, the target audience, or the desired length of the post. Additionally, the instructions to make the post "SEO-friendly" are too vague and don't provide specific guidance on how to achieve that goal.

Follow up Prompts

Follow-up prompts are an important part of the prompt writing process because they allow you to give feedback to ChatGPT and guide it towards generating the output that you want. For example, if the initial output is not quite what you were looking for, you can provide more specific details or clarify your original prompt to help ChatGPT better understand your request. Additionally, follow-up prompts can be used to expand on the output that ChatGPT generates, ask for further clarification, or provide additional context for the content. By following up with ChatGPT, you can ensure that you are getting the most relevant and useful output possible.

Here are 10 examples of powerful follow-up prompts for ChatGPT:

How to Keep ChatGPT Generating: Using Follow-Up Prompts to Prompt More Output

Sometimes ChatGPT may stop midway through generating content because it has reached the maximum number of output characters. In such cases, it is helpful to prompt ChatGPT to keep going. You can use phrases like "keep writing" or "continue generating" to signal that you want it to generate more content. This will prompt ChatGPT to keep generating output until it reaches the desired length or runs out of prompts.

Here are some example prompts to tell ChatGPT to keep going:

  1. "Continue writing until the output reaches 1000 words"

  2. "Keep generating until the document is complete"

  3. "Please generate 20 more bullet points"

  4. "Continue writing the story from where you left off"

  5. "Please add more details to the current section"

  6. "Keep going with the current topic"

  7. "Can you provide more examples to support the argument?"

  8. "Please generate 5 more tweets"

  9. "Keep writing until you cover all the subtopics"

  10. "Continue generating until you reach the conclusion."

Pro tip: If ChatGPT generates an unrelated result, simply click “Regenerate Response” until it gets back on track. Sometimes you might need to do it 3-5. Keep regenerating until you receive a proper result.

Create a table

Sometimes, you may want ChatGPT to generate output in a table format for better organization and presentation of information. To do so, you can include a prompt that specifies the table format and the required columns. For example, you could ask ChatGPT to create a table that includes the following columns: "Title", "Author", "Publication Date", and "Summary". By using this approach, ChatGPT can generate output that is structured in a clear and concise way, making it easier to read and understand. Additionally, requesting a table format can help you save time and effort by avoiding the need to manually format and organize information yourself.

Example prompt: “Provide me with a table comparing [x] and [x] of the [x topic]. Make sure to include the following columns: [the specifications of the table].”

Target Audience

Writing a brief description of your target audience when creating a prompt for ChatGPT can be incredibly helpful in ensuring that the generated output meets the intended purpose. By identifying your audience, you can ensure that ChatGPT produces content that is tailored to their interests, needs, and knowledge level. For example, if your target audience is college students, you might want to include some relevant topics or themes related to their studies or popular culture. Providing this information can help ChatGPT better understand the context of the prompt and generate output that is more relevant and useful to your audience.

Topic at hand

Providing a clear and concise description of the topic at hand is an essential part of writing a ChatGPT prompt. This allows ChatGPT to understand the context and purpose of the task at hand and generate output that is relevant and accurate. Without a clear description, ChatGPT may generate output that misses the mark or is off-topic. A brief summary of the topic also helps to ensure that the generated output is consistent with your expectations and meets your specific needs.

Context

Providing a brief description of the context when writing your ChatGPT prompt can be extremely helpful in ensuring that the AI generates the desired output. Context provides important details about the situation, setting, and purpose of the prompt, which can help guide ChatGPT's responses. Without context, ChatGPT may generate output that is not relevant or helpful to the intended purpose.

Key Features/Points

When creating a prompt for ChatGPT, it's important to include a brief description of the key features or points that you want it to focus on. This is especially helpful when you're dealing with complex topics or tasks. By including a clear and concise summary of the main ideas or objectives, you can ensure that ChatGPT has a clear understanding of what it needs to accomplish. This will help you get more accurate and relevant responses.

Purpose/Goal

It's important to be clear about the purpose or goal of the task you're asking it to perform. This is because ChatGPT's output can vary depending on the specific goal or purpose you have in mind. Providing a brief description of the purpose or goal can help ChatGPT generate more relevant and useful output that aligns with your expectations.

Call to Action

It's essential to include a clear Call to Action (CTA) that tells ChatGPT what specific action to take in response to the prompt.
