May 26, 2025

imageCatching up with a friend after a long time can feel both exciting and a little awkward. What should you say? How do you start the conversation? This guide will help you navigate the conversation naturally, using common English expressions that native speakers often use.

🌞 How to Start a Catch-Up Conversation

Use Present Perfect Tense to talk about things that have happened from the last time you saw each other until now.

Examples:

  • Hey, long time no see. It’s been a while, hasn’t it?

  • Yeah, it’s been forever. How have you been?

  • I feel like I haven’t seen you in forever. We have so much to catch up on.

  • When was the last time we saw each other? A month? A few months?

🌼 Ask How They’ve Been

These questions show you care and are curious about their life.

A:

  • How have you been?

  • How has life been?

  • How has work/the family/the kids been?

  • How’s life?

  • How’s the family/ the fam?

B:

  • It’s been a bit hectic, but I’m learning a lot.

  • Things have been really nice lately.

  • The kids are growing up so fast.

  • Everyone’s healthy and happy.

🌼 Ask What They’ve Been Doing

Use Present Perfect or Present Perfect Continuous to ask about work, hobbies, or daily life.

A:

  • What have you been up to?

  • What have you been working on?

  • What have you been up to this week/at work/for fun?

  • What has your family/kids/husband been up to?

B:

  • I’ve been working a lot lately.

  • Mostly work, but I’ve also started exercising more.

  • Just the usual stuff, nothing too exciting.

🌼 Ask What’s New

This is great when you want to hear any updates.

A:

  • What’s new with you? / What’s new with work?

  • Anything new with the house/the guy you were dating/our old friends?

B:

  • Not much. Same old routine.

  • It’s been busy, but in a good way.

  • Work’s been steady, thankfully.

🌼 Ask for Details or Feelings

When you want to go a bit deeper.

A:

  • How have things been with the baby/new house?

  • How have things been going at work?

B:

  • It’s been a journey—lots of DIY projects.

  • Amazing, but exhausting.

🌼 Check If They’re Really Okay

Sometimes, you sense that your friend might be struggling.

A:

  • Have things been going okay?

  • Health-wise, have you been feeling alright?

  • Has everything been okay at work?

B:

  • I’ve been okay. Some days are harder than others.

  • It’s been rough lately, but I’m staying positive.

  • Thanks for asking. I’m managing.

You can also say:

  • Would you like to talk about it? I’m happy to listen. (If they don’t want to talk, just let it go.)

💐 Ending the Conversation

Finish with warmth and the hope of seeing each other again.

Say:

  • It was so great to finally catch up.

  • I’ve missed our chats. Let’s not wait another three months!

  • Let’s do this again sooner rather than later.
