7 Day Practice Plan for Writing or Speaking Longer Sentences

Here’s a 7-Day Mini-Practice Plan to help students master writing and speaking longer, more complex sentences through the break-and-build method.

Day 1: Short to Long (Basic Conjunctions)

Goal: Learn to connect short sentences with and, but, so, because.

Task:

  1. Write 5 sets of 3 short sentences. Example:

    • I like apples.

    • They are sweet.

    • I eat them often.

  2. Combine each set into one long sentence.

    • I like apples because they are sweet, and I eat them often.

  3. Speaking Practice: Read the combined sentences aloud, adding natural pauses.

Day 2: Cause and Effect

Goal: Use because, since, so, therefore to show reasons and results.

Task:

  1. Take 5 pairs of short sentences.
Example: I was tired. I went to bed early.

  2. Combine them: I went to bed early because I was tired.

  3. Speaking Practice: Say each sentence in two ways:

    • Short: “I was tired. I went to bed early.”

    • Long: “I went to bed early because I was tired.”

Day 3: Time Connectors

Goal: Use when, after, before, while, until.

Task:

  1. Write 5 sets of short sentences that show a sequence. Example:

    • I finished dinner.

    • I watched TV.

  2. Combine them: After I finished dinner, I watched TV.

  3. Speaking Practice: Tell a 3-step story (3 short sentences), then combine them.

Day 4: Adding Details with Relative Clauses

Goal: Use who, which, that.

Task:

  1. Start with 5 short sentences. Example:

    • I met a man.

    • He is a doctor.

  2. Combine them: I met a man who is a doctor.

  3. Speaking Practice: Describe objects or people in your room using “who” or “that.”

Day 5: Breaking Down Long Sentences

Goal: Learn to simplify long, complex sentences.

Task:

  1. Take a long sentence:
When I traveled to London last year, I visited the Tower of London, which was amazing, but it rained the whole time.

  2. Break it into shorter ones:

    • I traveled to London last year.

    • I visited the Tower of London.

    • It was amazing.

    • It rained the whole time.

  3. Speaking Practice: Say both the long and short versions out loud.

Day 6: Combine and Expand

Goal: Practice connecting 4–5 short sentences into one fluent, natural sentence.

Task:

  1. Start with:

    • I woke up.

    • I was late.

    • I missed breakfast.

    • I ran to school.

  2. Combine them:
I woke up late, so I missed breakfast and had to run to school.

  3. Speaking Practice: Say the short version first, then the combined version.

Day 7: Free Practice (Speaking + Writing)

Goal: Create a mini story (5–6 sentences) and turn it into 2–3 longer, connected sentences.

Task:

  1. Write 5 short sentences about something that happened to you yesterday.

  2. Combine them using and, but, because, which, after, while, etc.

  3. Speaking Practice: Tell your story twice—first in short sentences, then in long, smooth sentences.
