Weeks of planning, gear checklists, and hours of packing all lead up to that magical moment when you strap on your backpack and head out into the wild. This time, my trip to the Sierra Nevada felt a little different – and not just because of the stunning landscapes I had ahead of me. For the first time in years, I packed a brand-new shelter: the Hyperlite Mountain Gear Mid 1. I was both excited and curious to see how it would perform in the backcountry.

But here’s the catch… this tent doesn’t come with the pieces most tents do! No pole, no guylines, no stakes. I had to update my trusty gear list and make sure I didn’t leave anything behind. Nothing like the sprawling Hilleberg Nammatj 2GT I use in the winter. The Mid 1 is compact, minimalistic, and perfect for the unknown campsites ahead.

There’s something special about hiking all day, not knowing where you’ll set up camp, yet trusting you’ll find the perfect spot. My first night was a bit of a gamble – as it always is – but I found a site, pitched my tent, and slowly began to master the Mid 1's setup. By night three, I was setting it up faster, smarter, and using the space like a pro.

When you're out there, nothing beats that moment when your shelter becomes your safe haven – especially when wind and rain start battering your tent. The Mid 1 handled it all like a champ. 💪
