À propos Adontai Mason
Writer. Advocate. Digital Shaman. Building the 100 Lives Mission.
Update: the lease fell through, and I'm now fighting a disputed eviction balance - with receipts - while I move into a weekly motel near work and regroup. The 100 Lives Mission keeps going from whatever floor I'm on; that's the whole point of it.
WHEN YOU LOSE EVERYTHING, WORDS BECOME EVERYTHING
I wrote from a tent at Tampa Hope. From shelter waitlists. From fast-food booths where a small coffee bought me three hours of outlet access and a place to think. Four years of housing instability, and I never stopped writing — because the words were the one thing nobody could take.
That's not a pitch. That's the origin story of everything you'll find here.
What This Page Is
This is the home of my Behind the Paywall work — the essays that go deeper than what I post anywhere else. The unfiltered drafts. The pieces where I name names, count dollars, and tell you exactly what survival costs in America.
I write in the tradition of Kintsugi — the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold. The philosophy is simple: the cracks are where the gold goes. I don't hide the broken places in my story. I fill them with something that shines, and I show you how it's done.
You've maybe read "Still Here." Or "What the Floor Taught Me." Or "Dear Mitchell." Those pieces exist because people like you decided this voice was worth keeping alive.
What Your Support Actually Does
Let me lead with material reality, because that's how I do everything:
A single coffee covers bus fare across Tampa — the same routes I rode to caseworker appointments, job interviews, and finally, to sign a lease after four years without one.
A monthly membership keeps the essays coming: the long-form work, the Behind the Paywall pieces, the writing that takes days on a laptop balanced on a sofa arm because that's where the work gets done.
Any contribution funds the larger mission — including the 100 Lives Mission, my housing-justice initiative built on one conviction: nobody's story should end on a waitlist.
I'm not going to tell you your coffee saves my life. I survived the worst of it already. What your support does is something different: it buys the hours. The hours between a shift at the call center and the page. The hours it takes to turn raw memory into something that makes a stranger understand what they've never lived.
What You Get
Behind the Paywall essays — the deepest, rawest work I produce
First access to new pieces before they go anywhere else
The honest ledger — I tell my supporters where things stand, always. No performance. No spiritual bypassing. No pretending the light arrived before it did.
Why Me, Why This
There are plenty of people writing about homelessness. I wrote from inside it, in real time, and I'm still writing now that I'm on the other side — because the other side is where the real story gets told. The system doesn't stop being broken the day you get keys. And the person who carried those years doesn't stop carrying them.
I'm a writer, a yoga teacher, a Kabbalah student, and a man who learned that the floor teaches you things the ceiling never will.
The cracks are where the gold goes. Your support is part of the gold.
