Housing Justice · A Week in Review
Saturday, August 29 to Friday, September 4, 2026

You got the public version on Wednesday. This is the ledger underneath it: what got done, what I decided, and what is still sitting open with my name on it.

Archivist's note. Written Saturday, September 5, 2026, 1:20 a.m., from a motel chair by the window unit. Names of private individuals are left out on purpose. The argument is with the paperwork, not with anybody's search results. Case numbers stay in my file, not here.

The key went in the mailbox on September 1. That is the whole public story, and it is true. What I did not put in the public post is that the same seven days held a bank finally answering me after five weeks, a housing program telling me a letter I am holding in my hand does not exist, a full sweep of every subscription I was still paying for, and one application I have had open in a browser tab since Tuesday and have not filed. This is that week, the way I keep it for myself. I am handing it to you because you are the ones paying for the chair I am writing it from.

✦

What got done

  • Moved out of the Mohawk apartment on August 31, on the agreed date. Key in the mailbox September 1, confirmed in writing to the landlord and the realtor. No eviction filed with my name on it. That sentence cost me the unit and it is worth more than the unit.

  • Filed the reconsideration request with my rental assistance program on September 1. The program director answered the same morning: I am not banned from the program.

  • September 4, corrected the record. My caseworker wrote that no termination notice exists in my file. I sent her the November 3, 2023 letter from my case manager at the time and copied program leadership and the City of Tampa's housing director. She came back within the hour: the termination is not in my file, and they cannot access emails from three years ago. I can. I have it.

  • Bank of America finally answered. September 2, their Enterprise Resolution office acknowledged the fraud-flag dispute I mailed in late July, assigned a single point of contact, and gave me a case number. First response in five weeks of silence.

  • Published four Substack pieces in seven days: "The Word Is Suspects" (8/30), "Eight Days, Then Seven" (8/31), "Four Years From the Number" (9/1), "Never Slept in the Bed" (9/3). Substack marked nine straight weeks of publishing on the 31st, the same day I carried the last box out.

  • Posted "Keys, Motels, and the Next Fight" here on September 3. The follow-up on the missing letter is drafted and at v3. It is not out yet because I want it right, not fast.

  • Ran the subscription purge to the end. Confirmed cancellations from Kineto, Walter Writes, and Podcastor (full refund initiated). Requests filed or escalated with Chirr, JoggAI, Gopuff, X Premium, Riverside, Spira, SuperX, and Genspark. Homeaglow confirmed the $19.

  • The website: sent the site builder's support team the full timeline plus screenshots on September 3 for both open tickets. They opened a developer ticket, and the preview bug came back fixed the same day. Sent the first prompt of the repairs pack on the 4th and got a real build run back.

  • USPS change of address submitted, forwarding live September 4. Told the landlord and realtor to send anything about the deposit to General Delivery, Tampa. A man with no address still has an address if he asks for one.

  • Built the Tampa RMAP eligibility summary and checklist after my housing navigator flagged the program on the 2nd. Sent Mom the motel call script and the full list.

Nine things closed. Every one of them was closed by me sending a piece of paper to someone who would rather I had not.

Decisions made

  • Handed the keys back instead of fighting to stay. That closes off the unit for good. It also keeps an eviction filing off every application I will ever fill out, and it starts the Florida clock: they have thirty days from move-out to put any deposit claim in writing. September 30.

  • Weekly motel over Tampa Hope. A room one week at a time, near the job. Tampa Hope's front door is thirty days in a tent I pay for, then a wait for a pod at twenty percent of income. I picked the room. It costs more, it is not stable, and it keeps me at work. I am not pretending that math is clean.

  • Escalated the program past the caseworker. I could have taken the "come pick up your file" answer and stopped. Instead it went to leadership and to the City. That turns a quiet conversation into a record, which is the point.

  • Cut the software spend to the floor. A month of scattered cancellation emails became a clean sweep this week. Most of those tools were for Kosmic Quill. I am running lighter now, on purpose. Some of that is discipline. Some of it is that the money is gone.

  • Kept the website pack paused. No new prompts until verification returns real numbers against the live site. First prompt only. Everything else waits.

Every decision this week traded comfort for a record. I would make all five again.

I did not lose the apartment. I closed it, on a date I chose, with a key I placed myself. The difference is everything I will fill out for the rest of my life.

Still open

  • The $2,200 deposit. Nothing from the landlord or the realtor since I confirmed the unit was vacated. They have until September 30 to make a written claim. Waiting on them.

  • My client file. Has to be picked up in person and signed for. I proposed Tuesdays. No time confirmed. Waiting on the caseworker.

  • The reconsideration itself. Sent to program leadership and the City on the 4th. No answer yet.

  • #380 on the TBRA waitlist, and the Coordinated Entry reassessment is not scheduled. Everything at the program is full.

  • RMAP application. The portal is open, I have the checklist, and I have not applied. That one is on me, not on anyone else. I am telling you so that it is harder to keep not doing it.

  • A second housing lead. A caseworker sent me the name on the 1st. I asked for a phone number and never got one. Waiting on her.

  • Metro Tampa Bay is out of money for the year. Confirmed August 31. Closed until the next funding cycle.

  • The website chat bug. Escalated on the 3rd, no word from the dev team since. Twelve prompts unsent. https://www.kosmicquill.com/ still has /about blank, two essay pages reading "Article not found," /never-slept-in-the-bed at 404, and /support still naming a platform I left.

  • Money owed to me. X approved a $17.49 courtesy refund on August 31 and never sent it. Genspark refused the refund outright and I pushed back on the 4th. Spira has not replied since September 1. SuperX has ignored four emails since August 9.

  • Adobe. Untouched five-plus weeks. Nothing since late July. Five charges still sit outside both PayPal cases.

  • A recruiter. Untouched. I told them on the 1st I might miss the call. Silence since.

  • 100 Lives Mission. No movement. Nothing this week. Launch still parked at 2027.

Twelve open. Most are waiting on someone else. One is waiting on me, and it is the only one that touches the money.

✦

That is the week. Not a redemption arc, not a collapse. A man carried boxes out on a Monday, mailed a key on a Tuesday, and spent the other five days answering paper with paper from a chair that is not his.

If you are reading this, you are one of the people keeping that chair paid for a week at a time. I do not have a clean way to say what that means, so I will say the plain one: the room exists because you do. Small and steady is what got me through this week, and small and steady is what I am asking for, if you are able and only if you are able.

The public post, the essays, and the membership tiers all live in one place: buymeacoffee.com/adontaimason. If all you can do this week is read, that counts. You are welcome to leave a comment below, and you are welcome to say nothing at all.
