THE HONEST LEDGER – by Adontai Mason

imageI'm $350 short.

Rent was due. I paid what I had. It wasn't enough.

I told you when you got here that I'd always tell you where things stand. No performance. No spiritual bypassing. No pretending the light showed up before it did. So here's where things stand.

Where Things Stand

Rent — $1,100

Already paid — – $600

Unauthorized charges being returned to me — – $200

Next paycheck, pulled early — – $100

Late fees — + $150

Still short — $350

That's the number. Not a metaphor. $350 — ideally by midweek, but anything before the end of the month still helps.

The Math

$350 is thirty‑five coffees at $10. Seventy at $5.

There are 25 of you on this page. Which means this doesn't close unless a few of you bring somebody.

I'd rather ask thirty‑five people for a little than three people for a lot. The math is identical. The weight isn't. One person carrying $350 makes me a burden. Thirty‑five people carrying $10 makes us a room full of people who showed up.

Four years without a lease taught me exactly what happens when a gap like this doesn't close. I'm not interested in learning it twice. That's the whole reason I'm asking.

If You Can't Give, You're Still Welcome Here

Some of you can't. Some of you shouldn't — you've got your own gap to close this month, and I'm not going to pretend I don't know that. It costs you nothing with me. I'd rather have you here reading than gone and guilty.

And if you want to help without money: send this to one person. That's a text message. That's genuinely enough.

If All You Have Is a Thought, Send It

I mean that plainly.

Not prayer as a lever. Not praying something out of me or into me. Just the ordinary kind — wishing me well, holding me in mind, wanting good to find its way to me.

I've come to believe those thoughts arrive as something. Not always money. Sometimes a door I didn't know was there. Sometimes a person calling at the right hour. Sometimes just the nerve to make one more phone call after I'd run out of nerve. Wealth was never only currency to me — it's resource, in whatever form it decides to show up in.

You out there, thinking of me, is not the lesser gift. Some months it has carried further than the money did.

All my love.
