# The Anatomy of a Catch-22: Rent, Systemic Flags, and Fighting My Way Back

I want to be completely transparent with everyone about where things stand and exactly what I'm fighting to resolve. This is a personal update, and I want to share the reality of the numbers with you openly.

### The Ledger

Here is the precise breakdown of the financial hurdle. The total obligation reached $1,300.00 due to accumulating fees, but every dollar recently paid has been directly verified through the rent channel as going strictly toward rent.

The Obligation:

* Rent Owed: $1,100.00

* Late Fee (Flat): $50.00

* Late Fee ($5/day for 30 days): $150.00

* Total Obligation: $1,300.00

What Has Been Paid in the Last 30 Days:

* July 18: $491.08

* July 18: $25.00

* July 28: $50.91

* July 29: $115.22

* July 29: $100.00

* Total Paid: −$782.21

### The Remaining Gap

This brings the remaining balance to $517.79, assuming it is paid by Friday, July 31st.

However, because late fees accrue at $5 every single day, time actively affects the total.

* Cleared Today (Wednesday): $507.79

* Cleared Tomorrow (Thursday): $512.79

* Cleared Friday: $517.79

Adding to the Catch-22, I currently have $127 in frozen disputes—a $98 Walmart+ refund and a $29 PostSyncer duplicate charge. That locked money would cover nearly a quarter of the gap, but it is trapped in the system at the exact wrong moment.

Every single day this sits open costs an additional five dollars. A contribution made today genuinely goes further than the same contribution made on Friday. It is a real, mathematical urgency.

If you are in a position to help me clear this hurdle, you can support me through my [Buy Me a Coffee](https://buymeacoffee.com/adontaimason) page.

Thank you for the support, the shares, and for reading. I will keep you updated.

Denied.

Not for income. Not for payment history. For a check I didn’t write, didn’t cash, and never saw a dollar of — in 2023.

That single sentence explains the last two weeks of my life better than any budget spreadsheet could. So instead of the usual hardship post, I’m going to show you the mechanics.

✦

Where things actually stand

I’m behind on July rent, and I’ve received a 3-Day Notice from my landlord.

I haven’t been sitting still with it. I’ve sent partial payments of $115 and $50 as money came in, plus what arrived through community support. An approved vacation pay payout from work is pending and will absorb part of what’s left.

Remaining balance as of today: $___

The shortfall traces back to unpaid medical absences and two charges currently frozen in dispute processing:

  • Walmart+ — $98 — Unauthorized. Active dispute with my financial institution.

  • PostSyncer — $29 — Unauthorized recurring subscription. Refund in progress.

Both will credit back. Neither will credit back this week.

A chargeback is money you own and cannot touch. That isn’t a budgeting failure. It’s a timing failure — and timing is the one thing scarcity never gives you.

✦

The part that isn’t about this month

When the balance got tight, I did what the system tells you to do: I looked for short-term liquidity. A payday advance through ACE Cash Express. An emergency loan through Growth Financial / NetCredit.

Every application died at the same checkpoint — a Veritec check failure, or an automated risk verification flag.

Here’s why.

In early 2023, I was recruited for a remote role by an outfit calling itself “Lakeside Bank.” It was not a bank. As part of “onboarding,” they instructed me to open a Bank of America account and mailed me a check for home office equipment.

The check was fraudulent. When it was dishonored, Bank of America closed the account and placed an adverse fraud marker on my ChexSystems and Early Warning Services (EWS) records.

Read that sequence again. The scam targeted me. The flag landed on me.

Automated lending platforms run eCheck and Veritec queries against those exact databases. So every emergency application I submit gets read as fraud history → decline. It takes seconds. There is no human in the loop to hear the word “victim.”

The system that failed to protect me from the fraud is the same system now citing that fraud as the reason it can’t help me.

People love to ask whether someone in my position budgeted. Nobody asks whether the safety net was quietly disconnected three years before they needed it.

✦

What I’m actually doing about it

I want this part on record, because I’m not asking anyone to fund a situation I’m not working.

  • I compiled and mailed a full Fraud Incident Report & Record Dispute to Bank of America Risk Management.

  • It requests a formal review, official recognition as a victim of employment fraud, and removal of the adverse markers from ChexSystems and EWS.

  • I’m pursuing the Walmart+ and PostSyncer disputes to completion rather than absorbing the loss.

  • I’m working the rent balance down in whatever increments I can. My landlord and I have an agreement to shift to biweekly payments aligned with my paychecks once I’m current.

Administrative appeals move on their own timeline. Rent moves on the first of the month. Those two clocks have never once agreed.

✦

Where you come in — if you want to

Two kinds of help are genuinely useful right now, and one of them is free.

The one that costs nothing

If you’ve successfully cleared a ChexSystems or EWS flag, I want to know how you did it. If you know a Hillsborough County emergency rent assistance program that actually answers the phone, send it. If you’ve worked the other side of a Veritec denial desk, fifteen minutes of your knowledge is worth more to me than almost anything else on this page.

The other one is coffee

If you’re in a position to put something toward the balance, it goes exactly where I said it goes — the rent, this month, this address.

And if you’re not in a position to give — reading this the whole way through, seeing the machinery instead of the morality tale, is its own kind of support. I’ll take it, and I mean that.
