Lost in Ybor with a side of free fries

Jun 21, 2025

imageToday, my steps took me from Orient to Ybor, meandering through the Tampa area, which is a common occurrence. My first stop was a McDonald's near Columbus—though I still can't get the intersection right. Is it 50th and Columbus? Who's to say? Unfortunately, that McDonald's was shut—perhaps undergoing a remodel—so I made my way to another McDonald's in Ybor.

Even though I knew it was the afternoon, I hadn't checked the time, so imagine my surprise when I realized it was already 8:30 p.m. I was just in time to snag some fries and a drink for a cool $2.79, only because the fries were free through a mobile app deal. The purchase earned me just enough points to score a free McChicken. With no plans in mind and nothing certain ahead, I'm lingering here in Ybor, pondering my next move.

There's an undercurrent of uncertainty that's frustrating. I often find myself in this limbo, waiting for outside help or a financial breakthrough so I can make my next move. This uncertain state brings fear and panic, with thoughts running wild—'Woe is me. The world is insane. What if something happens to me out here?' It's hard not having a clear direction, particularly when there's no availability at shelters like Salvation Army or Cove.

I'm essentially out here wandering, which encapsulates my current reality. Communication has its hurdles, too, given that I'm unable to make or receive regular phone calls. Amidst this, I'm hoping to receive funds soon from kind people through ‘Buy Me a Coffee’, though banking holidays have thrown a wrench into the timing. This platform offers a distinct way to separate donations from my personal cash flow, which helps in managing incoming funds more effectively.

It's tough not having a stable place to plan financial strategies, and life on the streets doesn't give much room for careful budgeting. My nights are typically restless, as safety concerns prevent me from staying in one place for too long. Standing in a parking lot between busy streets isn't exactly conducive to meticulous financial planning.

I've relied on the generosity of others through platforms like Venmo and PayPal, but I'm still exploring whether a business account would affect my situation. The idea is to build towards some financial buffer—ideally a thousand dollars—providing a cushion to help plan weekly expenses better.

At night, the lack of a secure, static place pushes me into perpetual motion. Finding a safe park bench or a 24-hour location to rest isn't easy, and even brief stops can attract unwanted attention from security or opportunistic individuals.

Keeping tabs on unexpected costs, such as trial app subscriptions that charge if not canceled, continues to be a challenge. Amidst the chaos of my daily existence, I try to list tasks or ideas, hoping to grab some clarity. Unfortunately, this often comes at the end of a long day where exhaustion outweighs my intentions.

My journey is marked by brief spells in motels, offering temporary relief—a hot shower and few valuable hours of sleep. Once checked out, I’m back on the move, grabbing a bite and refocusing on whatever comes next amid this whirlwind existence.

Support This Work on Buy Me a Coffee

If these stories resonate with you and you'd like to support both my immediate needs and ongoing advocacy work, I've found Buy Me a Coffee to be the most effective platform for several reasons:

Why Buy Me a Coffee Works Best:

  • Transparent tracking - Completely separate from personal payment apps, making it easier to manage donations and show accountability

  • Flexible support options - You can contribute any amount that feels right for your situation

  • Gradual payout system - Helps create more sustainable support rather than feast-or-famine cycles

  • Community building - Allows supporters to follow the journey and see real impact

How Your Support Helps:

  • Immediate needs - Food, temporary shelter, basic necessities during crisis periods

  • Stability building - Working toward that crucial $1,000 buffer that would allow for week-by-week planning instead of daily survival mode

  • Advocacy work - Supporting the time and resources needed to document these experiences and develop better support systems for others

The Reality of Donation Timing:While I often need support immediately due to the unpredictable nature of street life, Buy Me a Coffee's payout schedule (next day for some payments, Monday for others due to banking) actually helps create a more sustainable approach. It prevents the dangerous cycle of having everything at once and then nothing, which can lead to poor decision-making born from desperation.

Every Contribution Matters:Whether it's the cost of a coffee, a meal, or more substantial support - each contribution represents hope, dignity, and a step toward stability. More importantly, your support helps fund the documentation and sharing of these experiences, creating awareness that can help others facing similar struggles.
