Keys, Motels, and the Next Fight

Keys, Motels, and the Next Fight

Hi friends,

Time for the honest update, because the picture has changed again and you deserve the current one.

Where things stand

On August 31st I handed back my keys. On my terms, on the agreed date, before an eviction could be filed with my name on it. The lawyer told me that part matters: an eviction filing follows you into every application you will ever fill out, and I did not give them that.

The dispute over the money is in writing and in their hands. Six payments in July, $908.32, receipts and transaction IDs for every dollar. The notice on my door said $1,600. The math, if those payments are credited the way the paper says they should be, says $191.68. And my $2,200 deposit now sits inside a clock that Florida law sets: thirty days from move-out for the landlord to put any claim in writing, or the claim is forfeited. I know my dates. September 30th is circled.

Where I am sleeping

A weekly motel near my job. I work full time at the call center, forty hours a week, and I rent a room one week at a time. That sentence is the whole essay I have not written yet.

And you should know what the "help" looks like from the inside. Tampa Hope called. To even be considered, you call Monday at 9 a.m. sharp for a chance at placement. Not a placement. A chance. If you get in, the program starts with thirty days living in a tent, and the tent is not free. Then you wait in line for a pod at twenty percent of your income, capped around $200 a month. That is the front door to housing for a working man in this county in 2026. A tent you pay for, entered through a phone call you have to win.

I am back on the rapid rehousing list. The applications are still running. The machines still move slower than the harm.

Where I stand

I am not writing this from defeat. I am documenting all of it, and I am starting to push back in the open. A series of essays is coming on what this system actually does to a tenant who keeps his receipts. It is called The Tenant's Paper. The first one is about the deposit clock, and it is nearly ready.

Everything lives at my website now, the home base for all of it: www.kosmicquill.com. Follow there for the series, the podcast, and the honest ledger, where I tell you what came in, what it bought, and which machine moved.

How you can help

Same as always. You reading this is already something. Sharing this page helps. And if you are able to support the work, what you are buying right now is a week of roof with no strings attached and the space to keep writing from inside it. Small and steady beats big and once. It always has.

The vessel is not broken. It is being rebuilt in public, with receipts.

Thank you for being here,

Traie
