I Took a Sentence Back

I Took a Sentence Back

Hi friends,

A while back I wrote an essay called The Angel of Death. A fair number of you told me one line in it helped: that death is the great equalizer, that it comes for the housed and the unhoused alike, and that there is a strange mercy in that.

I have rewritten it, and the rewrite starts by taking that sentence back.

What changed

Death arrives for everyone. It does not arrive on the same schedule, and the schedule has an address on it. The average unhoused adult dies around fifty. A forty-year-old sleeping outside carries roughly the mortality risk of a housed person approaching sixty. Those are not my numbers. They are HUD, the NBER, county public health reviews, and every citation is at the bottom of the piece so you can check me.

So the new version keeps what I would still defend, that the Angel is a messenger and not a reaper, and drops the part I got wrong. Death does not discriminate. Everything that gets you there does.

Why it matters right now

I did not rewrite this from a safe distance. I wrote it at 1 a.m. with notices on the counter and the lease-ending paperwork sitting unopened in my inbox, which is the most honest thing in the essay. It also puts my own numbers on the table, the real monthly ledger, because I have asked everyone to look at the system's math and it would be cowardly not to show mine.

A lease is a health document. Nobody files it that way. But if losing housing moves your expected age of death by a decade or more, then an eviction is a clinical event, and I wanted that said plainly.

Read it

The revised essay is here: https://send.kosmicquill.com/a/angel-of-death-revisedhtml-Jd1Nx9LV

The original stays up beside it. I would rather leave a wrong sentence visible next to its correction than quietly edit myself into having always been right.

It ends with a four-minute practice that costs nothing, because somebody did a version of it for me a few weeks ago and I am still housed while I write this. If the essay raises something, set it on a name you already know.

Thank you for reading, and for staying.
