I'm writing this from a motel room I pay for week to week. That's the material fact of this fight. Since 2023, offices that were supposed to help have held onto my money, my records, and my time, and every one of them has made the same quiet bet: that I'd get tired before they had to make me whole.
They lost that bet.
The records requests are filed. The demand letter is drafted. The lawyer answered. What's left is the unglamorous machinery of making a system respond: the city's research fee, certified mail, printing, the bus to legal aid. None of it is expensive. All of it costs something, and I'm covering it one week at a time.
Here's what I've learned about institutions: they don't fear anger. They fear paper. Every certified letter is a receipt they can't pretend they never got. Every records fee paid is a door they can't quietly close.
This is where you come in. I don't need one big rescue. I need a crowd of small hands on the rope.
$5 sends a certified letter they have to sign for.
$15 answers a records fee.
$25 covers a week of printing and postage for the whole paper trail.
If you've ever been ignored by an office that was supposed to help you, this fight is partly yours too. Back it if you can. Share it if you can't. Either one tells them somebody is watching.
Thank you for staying with me.
