My Madmen of Art Monday series honors the great Madmen of Irish Art—the ones who were too bold, too wild, too brilliant to stay within the lines.
We love to hate them and hate to love them, these devils of inspiration who could bring us to our knees with a single stroke of the brush, a turn of the phrase, a clash of the chords. They are the troublemakers and the truth-tellers, the ghosts who still whisper from canvas and page. Refusing to sit quietly on their perch above and left of the British Empire, these men—drunk on talent and, often enough, the best Irish whiskey—spun beauty from chaos.
I'll be featuring this series in alternating weeks on my Living Art Meaningfully Substack. Types of Celtic Knots and their meanings, source of image.
