working on a book about disenfranchised grief (non death related)
Welcome! Thank you for being interested in my book.
I believe grief, especially disenfranchised grief, is causing a huge open and infected wound in our world. "Disenfranchised grief" was coined by Kenneth Doka in 1989 and it is grief that is often invalidated or not openly acknowledged to avoid social consequences.
Though this term could still be used to describe the feeling that comes after death, I am interested in exploring this grief outside of a loss of life. There are many supports for bereavement, and I would like to create a space to grieve and live with grief without the pressure to compare that grief with bereavement.
Often people will withhold from healing because they do not feel like they are entitled to grieve. They feel that what they have lost isn't "worthy" in our current social contract to grieve. People who are experiencing grief have no need to compare and measure, there is room for all to work through their unique and sometimes complicated grief.
