I usually encourage my fellow farmers to do soil test first in order to know the soil pH. Normally, this can be a result of nutrients that are in excess. Too much nitrogen will do that to carrots. The lower the nutrients, the sweeter and better carrots grow. They need more phosphorus and potassium than nitrogen.
In compacted soil, the roots will change direction and develop deformation at the depth of compaction. Broad forking can help to break through the compaction layer and good composting will help balance your nutrients.
