"Does this mean the soil is too compacted to grow my carrots?. I feel like these are aliens in disguise lol. Regards"
This question actually came from one of our patreons - of which we gladly appreciate because it shows to us that you guys are following and you are willing to learn with us as we share our journey in the homesteading lifestyle.
Thanks.
I usually encourage my fellow farmers to do soil test first in order to know the soil pH. Normally, this can be a result of nutrients that are in excess. Too much nitrogen will do that to carrots. The lower the nutrients, the sweeter and better carrots grow. They need more phosphorus and potassium than nitrogen.
In compacted soil, the roots will change direction and develop deformation at the depth of compaction. Broad forking can help to break through the compaction layer and good composting will help balance your nutrients.
Good luck with your next batch!.
