Christmas to Remember 2.0: A Journey of Hope, Love, and Giving
This year, we embarked on a journey that will forever remain etched in our hearts. "A Christmas to Remember 2.0" wasn't just a fundraiser—it was a testament to the power of unity, compassion, and the collective desire to spread joy even in the most challenging of times. This initiative, built upon the success of our first event, aimed to bring the warmth of Christmas to orphaned and disabled children across Ukraine, whose lives have been overshadowed by conflict, hardship, and uncertainty.
The March
The task set 2 months before Christmas seemed impossible: 8 destinations, 4 of us (Ana and I, Dasha and Richard... and Tosyia of course!), 1390 presents for 1390 people!
With generous help and selfless compassion from Pal, Andy, Chris, David, Akiko, John and everyone else who rushed to get involved, we managed to close our fundraiser in a little over a month and set forth to buy and organise everything. Nearly all of the presents were bought from Ukraine.
The Road to Compassion
Our journey began with a generous delivery of medical aid from Misneach Ukraine, a humanitarian organization based in Ireland. This vital shipment arrived just in time to bolster the efforts of those who care for vulnerable children in Ukraine. With this aid in hand, our mission took on a deeper significance: not only would we bring Christmas gifts, but we would also offer tangible support for the health and well-being of the children who had been through so much.
The following day, our team set off for Svalyava Rehabilitation Center for Children, a place that offers hope and healing to young souls affected by physical and emotional trauma. The children there greeted us with wide eyes and shy smiles, their faces lighting up as we handed them beautifully wrapped gifts, each one carefully chosen with their needs and wishes in mind. For these children, the presents were more than just toys—they symbolized a moment of normalcy, a brief respite from the harsh realities of their daily lives.
A Day in Chynadyiovo
From Svalyava, we traveled to Chynadyiovo Orphanage, where the warmth of the season collided with the starkness of the orphanage’s atmosphere. The children at Chynadyiovo are no strangers to hardship, yet their resilience and hope were palpable. As we distributed the gifts—carefully chosen to bring joy, warmth, and comfort—there was a collective gasp of excitement, followed by laughter and heartfelt hugs. The orphanage’s staff, who work tirelessly to create a sense of family for these children, stood by, smiling through tears, grateful for the love and care that was pouring in from all corners of the world.
Vilshany: A Place of Strength
Our next stop took us to the Vilshany Center for Disabled Children, an institution where children with various disabilities are given the opportunity to thrive in a supportive and loving environment. Here, the meaning of our mission felt even more profound. The children—many of whom have limited mobility and face daily physical challenges—were overcome with joy as they received not just presents, but the recognition that they, too, were cherished and loved. The act of giving became an emotional exchange; as we offered our gifts, we received something far more precious in return: a sense of shared humanity, an unspoken bond that transcended words.
Mahala: A Cultural Heartbeat
Our final stop took us to Mahala, a cultural center in the village near Chernivtsi, where the echoes of traditional music and folklore paint a picture of Ukraine’s rich heritage. Here, we encountered a community that, despite facing hardships, continues to celebrate life. The children in Mahala, many from marginalized backgrounds, were filled with wonder as we distributed gifts and shared in the warmth of the season. It was here, surrounded by a vibrant culture, that we felt the true spirit of Christmas: not in the presents themselves, but in the sense of togetherness, solidarity, and shared humanity.
Extending the Reach: Kharkiv, Dnipro, and Turya Remetiv
Our mission didn’t stop with the children we met face-to-face. Through the generosity of our supporters, we were able to extend our reach far beyond the places we visited in person. Christmas presents were also sent to children in Kharkiv, Dnipro, and Turya Remetiv—regions that have felt the intense toll of war and displacement. While we couldn’t be there in person, the gifts carried our love and hope across the miles, serving as a reminder to these children that they are not forgotten.
A Year of Love and Support
None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of our incredible donors and volunteers. From the funds raised on platforms like Twitter, YouTube, and 4Fund, to the countless hours spent in preparation and logistics, every part of this journey was powered by the kindness and generosity of people who believed in the mission. Every donation, every share, every message of encouragement—each one was a small but significant contribution to creating a better Christmas for those who needed it most.
A Christmas to Remember
As we reflect on the success of "A Christmas to Remember 2.0," we are filled with gratitude for the opportunity to have made a real difference in the lives of these children. It was a Christmas like no other—one that will remain in the hearts of the children, the caregivers, and all of us who took part. It was not just about giving presents; it was about giving hope, love, and a reminder that no matter the circumstances, we are all capable of kindness and compassion.
In a year that has seen so much darkness, we brought a little light to those who needed it most. And that is something none of us will ever forget.
