Twitter vs Threads: The Internet’s World War

Aug 01, 2023

With the recent announcement of Instagram Threads by Mark Zuckerberg, the world has now started to see a world war, but not in the case of any nuclear holocaust or arms and weapons but in the form of internet battle. And this war is not fought between multiple corporations. This war is fought just between 2 giant corporations in the world, or as they say the 2 booming billionaires fighting the war, Elon Musk, and Mark Zuckerberg. This article focuses totally on this war and the impact it has on everyone’s lives.

Start of Twitter:

Twitter was started in 2008 by Jack Dorsey and his friends and soon revolved around controversies from the start. It was well believed that Jack betrayed his friend over the idea of Twitter and so it also showed the bitter truth behind company’s success. Just in 2 years after the Twitter’s release, The Social Network movie was released, and similar thing was highlighted in Facebook company as of how Mark Zuckerberg betrayed his friend. Now Twitter was just a normal conversation app. You post a tweet saying anything and people like, retweet or share it. What’s special about it was that it quickly became worldwide famous for controversial topics. Many famous people and celebrities who expressed their any concern or views on twitter were met with either support or hate on a large scale. And this increased the success of Twitter globally. While Twitter was headed by Jack Dorsey, he decided to step down after many years and pass on this empire to Parag Agarwal, a software engineer in the team of Twitter who too joined many years back. During this time Twitter got in heated exchange with Elon Musk which even led itself to lawsuits and many other things. The stock price of Twitter started to play like a puppet with highs and lows. And this battle eventually led to Elon Musk buying the company for 44 billion dollars and firing many people at Twitter. He eventually became the CEO and tried to convert the company in his own way.

Rise of Instagram Threads:

Suddenly on 3rd of July 2023, Mark Zuckerberg announced the competitor of Twitter. He called it as Threads, and this was developed under its parent, Instagram calling it as Instagram Threads. Mark said that it is a platform for public conversations and here people can post freely without any control. The platform which very similarly functions like Twitter was born out of nowhere and so the only buzzing word around was that Mark copied the idea from Twitter for his own gains. Threads allowed people to log in through their own Instagram profile and kept very easy to use UI. This is what I believe is the start of Internet’s World War.

The War between Elon and Mark:

While the app was published suddenly, it caught the attention of many people in the world and so everyone was talking about one thing which is, what will Elon Musk do? Will he file any lawsuit against Mark Zuckerberg for stealing his idea, or will he buy Threads from Mark to keep his Twitter kingdom alive? The buzz started to fly very high, and many memes were also circulated around social media regarding the same. It was already well known that Mark Zuckerberg is learning martial arts from an Brazilian trainer a few years back. This many speculations kept the news headlines occupied for many days. Even now and then people still think that the fight might happen at any time. Rumours have it that Italy’s government has approached Elon and Mark for their fight in Colosseum, Rome. So, the hype on this battle is huge.

Impact on Users:

As a user myself, I feel that this move will have an impact on daily use of software's. There are people who already have accounts on Twitter and now they have started to log in to Instagram Threads also. This will try to shift towards a new change to people from one environment to other and adapting to those changes will take some time. Apart from this, the use of Threads will moreover increase the usage of Instagram which is a good sign for the company but already a bad sign for all the teenagers wasting their time on the social media. Also, the data that these corporations already have is massive and this is like adding the extra piece of cake over a large dessert. I can just imagine again how this data will be used by companies to target us ads and other things. Elon Musk has also targeted to rename the Twitter to X and make it a multi-functional app. This will further increase people’s usage over smartphones which is already at an alarming high level. And I believe that this war will soon enter the virtual reality playground too. Who knows Elon Musk might develop and release new virtual reality giving competition to Metaverse.

My Personal Thoughts:

I believe that even though Threads is an amazing app but still I would prefer to use the Twitter platform. I believe that no single company should build a monopoly directly in any sector and by the experiences I have observed for Mark Zuckerberg, he is in the same way of acquiring multiple companies to set up his own monopoly. He did the same by buying out the WhatsApp and Instagram and now it is going ahead with Threads app. Also, in my opinion I feel that Elon Musk can bring change in the world by the work he is doing. Hence, I guess Twitter will take a new turn and transform into an application that everybody loves.

The war might go on, but I hope that users will never have to feel any trouble due to this.

Thank You! 😊
