Basic Automatic Filament Switch

Basic Automatic Filament Switch

Apr 20, 2023

Basic Automatic Filament Switch (BAFS) is my take on multicolor 3d printing. The reasons why I'm making this are primarily because the existing multicolor 3d printing addon are expensive.

Also I'm a parent, I think most parents will understand that if your kid(s) want to learn something you try your best to provide it. But also parents will know that most of the time kid(s) just wants to try things, and then got bored.

With BAFS you don't have to break your wallet. The costs to make BAFS is less around 50$ to 100$ for 4 filaments (colors). And most of the parts are commonly available, so it might even be less if you already have the them or can find cheaper ones.

I have to warned you though, it's a basic switch, it doesn't have any advanced features like sensors or anything like that. And this is a DIY project, so you need to have some basic skills and tools for tinkering things, like soldering, crimping, etc.

Also this design have the same challenges as the other similar designs like mmu2s, smuff, etc., for example you will encounter jams because of the filament tips got bigger and stuck while changing filaments, etc.

Of course they have solutions for the problems, and the solutions are most likely can be applied for BAFS too, e.g., filament cutter or ramming filament for jamming problem, etc.
