Stereotypes&Myths: There can be only one

May 17, 2022

Not only are society's portrayal of systems centered around misinformation, unfortunately, the very institution that exists for properly educating about this disorder, happens to be centered around another harmful sterotype that Systems face; Core Theory, with a goal of final fusion.

There can be only one...

Core Theory is the current Theory that most psychological doctors know as the truth about Systems. In Core theory, the idea is that within a System, there is one Alter known as the "Core" or the "Original". And that Alter is the one true identity of the human being. Many professionals, family, and friends expect systems to have one singular host- that is the Core, and to work towards final fusion- each Alter fusing into that singular Core. And though there are systems that do identify as having a "core", and some that do desire final fusion, presenting it as the only way systems can function is extremely harmful. It furthers confusion, and misinformation, about the disorder and leads to unattainable expectations for systems.

Even Non Systems have parts

Just as discussed previously, though it's obviously not exactly the same, code-switcing is the non-system equivalent to alter switching. This is because no human being can be summed up by only one experience. Non-systems have their work self, their family self, their partner self, etc. And they're free to move between these different "modes" of their personalities. Singular host and core Theory suggest that there should be only one mode. Which is just not attainable. As human beings, we require the ability to adjust to our surroundings in order to achieve the best outcome for our safety. Regardless of whether that human is a system or non-system.

And we are constantly adjusting those parts, in order to ensure it. Including incorporating traits that we observe and desire in the people around us.
